Hmmm i got 1 out of 10 on the short quiz - so i ain't even gunna attempt to learn it all.
Few questions though:
What is an outbound link and do i need them?
One of the questions in the test was this:
You have been doing perfectly in Google but all of a sudden you drop low. What will you do?
immediately revamp my site to get higher keyword density.
I will monitor my site for a month and then I will decide what to do.
Since I am so much dependent on Google, I will consider buying paid listings
Which is the right answer?
Thanks
Anne

Monitor for a month then decide.
The first is plain wrong, it's acting without understanding the root cause, which is probably just normal fluctuations.
The last is, um, just a bit like giving up. And you ought to have PPC running anyway, generally speaking.

It took time more than 27 mins for me. But I am with smiling face as I scored 92%.
But there is still room to improve.

Outbounds are any link from your site to another site.
You do need outbounds IMO. If there's another site you know of that will help your surfers, you ought to link to it (if it's not a competitor site). Do what's best for your customers.
NB, where you link to makes a difference to how your site is perceived. If you link to spammy neighbourhoods, your site could appear (to the Google algorithm) to be spammy too. Link to trusted sites, sites you think are exemplary or authoritative in your area of business, that's my advice.
I wouldn't lose too much time thinking about this though. It's not pivotal.

Thank you Rank - i have been carful to link to good sites although some do have a low pr - i thought i understood what it meant but your clarification is much appreciated.
Is it very damaging to link out to a site that doesn't link in because i feel that it is a realy worthy site to tell my customers about?
Thank you
Anne

You mean, is it damaging to link to a site that doesn't link to any other site at all? It's not damaging if we're just talking about that one factor.
Google understands that you personally can't do anything about who links to you so it's very difficult for someone to mess you up just by linking to your site from spammy sites, say.
On the other hand, you have the ultimate control of who YOU link to and if you link to spammy sites, they'll smell a rat or think they smell a rat, even if you're the innocent party.
A site that doesn't link anywhere else isn't spammy but it is odd. And it's bad for the users, which is the primary sin.

I linked out to freecycle but they do not link to me, i also linked to oxfam but they don't link to me - i think these are sites that my customers would benefit from.
Rank - i have another question - do you know the link so that i can check properly what pages i have in supplemental. My webman has told me that loads of companies pages are dropping into supplemental - he works for a huge company in it - i am told that Google are currently doing strange things and is convinced that my site is part of this. I think that it something different as google has been attempting to get in my site but can't due to either DNS timeouts, robot txt time out or url time out but he has run a DNS check thingy and says there are no faults with that.
banging my head against a huge brick wall now - what is your opinion?
Can i offer you any advice? How to make Sloe gin? Blackberry wine?
Thank you
Anne

OK, don't worry about linking to those guys, no problem there.
There is no Google supplemental index any more - well, that's not true, they just aren't labelled as such. I don't know what these strange things are that your web guy is talking about. Could mean anything. Can you elaborate?
I don't know what the problem is with your site but I can see a lot of the cached pages were visited well over a month ago - that's longer than the norm definitely. I'd still suggest a 'wait and see' approach for a couple of weeks - and get some more inbound links.
Sloe gin recipe? Why not

Linking to those sites is a good idea Anne, to many people get hooked up on what is good and what is bad. Trouble is no one really knows for sure, what's in today is usually out next month.
You look after your customers and you will do OK

Rank, I would ask your designer to check your site on all browsers as it is out on mine.

Thanks, will do, I've noticed it still has some issues, but didn't notice that one.
Cheers!

Thank you Rank and mr service Uk - need to find a shorter name for you
Ok, well on my travels i found this out: LOts of people from the 6th September which doesn't match with my dates of 17th August all have these same time outs - quite a lot of people on the google webmaster thing have reported the same and like me thay are all stressing - in the end Google came in and said that they would look into it and then came back and said it was their fault and repaired it - yep but not well enough cause another person as well as myself said that there was still an error.
So, if it is nothing to do with my site and this si to do with a fault at google how the heck do i get it sorted - 5 weeks for my site not to be indexed is now becoming critical - my .com and .co.uk home page have now gone completely and the rest will follow and i will go bump - i haven't got out of the struggling phase of a new bsuiness yet anyway and this all feels particularly cruel.
I am not concerend about the suplemental index but it seems that lots of bsuineses are noting some changes and probably nowt to worry about - google not being able to get into my site is a different matter and as it doesn't seem to be my sites fault and down to Google how do i ask them - there are no means on their webmaster tools of contacting them - i did mail but got a response telling me to use their form in the webmaster tools - hmm not easy to find and i can't get to it now.
i am so fed up with this now -
Thank you for any insight in advance - you two are darlings.
I will go and add the olinks back to freecycle and oxfam.
thank you!
anne

Ann,
I would not be bothered about anything other than getting your website set up correctly at present as there are many basic errors.

Are there? Blummin eck - how can you tell? I have passed all the info on that i have been given - i think my site is presently being upgraded to the new version of Zen, but not absolutely sure - think the person who built it is fed up now of me bombarding him with information.
I am so fed up now!
Can you see what the errors are? Do i need to do these now or wait like Rank told me to do.
I am getting more and more confused with it all - i feel like i have found the answer and then find that i am no further forwards.
I am taking a break from turning myself into a nutter with al of this and will come back after i have given my brain a rest cause it is all getting like too much for me.
If i don't chat before, have a good weekend everyone and thank you for your help!!!
Anne
