But, if your pages are not indexed they can't be ranked...so it affects page rank.
Just kidding For page rank or for indexing, site map can do good and only good. Especially with huge deep sites with bad navigation.

You really don't need a sitemap if all the pages of your site are indexed in the search engines. The main use of sitemaps is to show the SE's all the pages of the site and if they are already there then its not necessary.

it will be good if map your site because crawler index such site quickly but this doesn't mean that if you don't map your site then crawler will not index it.

Sitemaps has really nothing to do with SERPs... That's only a myth that if you have a sitemap your ranking in SE will do well....
Read, read and read, LEARN and Apply what you learn....

A site map can be valuable if you have pages that are very deep or if your using flash buttons to navigate the site. Using a site map with text links will make it possible for spiders to crawl all pages of the site. You should also create a Google site map and submit it to Google through the webmaster tools.

I feel XML sitemaps are very important. They allow Google to know all your pages... dont forget to do an HTML sitemap and add it to your robots.txt
sitemap: http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.html, this last is specially useful for Yahoo and MSN, although Yahoo's siteexployer will allow you to add an XML feed...

Yes, XML and HTML/XHTML sitemap are both important in site mapping, but XML sitemapping can be difficult if you do it manually, that is why there are sitemap generators made from sites that offer SEO services.

I concur to all the members who sad yes!
You've got the answer. If you haven't done the sitemap in your site then just pay some bucks for a developer.

Sitemaps help in speedier discovery and thus speedier indexing of your new pages and changes to existing pages. A simplest sitemap is just a text file of URLs, one per line.

Site maps can improve search engine optimization of a site by making sure that all the pages can be found. Most search engines will only follow a finite number of links from a page, so if a site is very large, the site map may be required so that search engines and visitors can access all content on the site.

Call me old fashioned, but sitemaps were originally for site users to find their way in a site if they get lost or if they aren't sure where to start.
If you ignore the SEO perspective (its tough I know, but there is no use having a site that ranks No1 for your key terms if people cant navigate their way around and leave...withour spending cash!) and go down the human aspect sitemaps are a must for big sites, this site wouldn't work with a site map (although the front page of the forums is a a map of section so its pretty much the same concept).
I add sitemaps for both user and serps, it doesn't guaruntee anything but hopefully it helps a person and a spider find their way around. A perfect example is dlink.co.uk its a hopeless site for navigation (especially when you really needa driver) its helped slightly by the fact the sitemap breaks down the site into sections.
Not everything has to help Serps directly, if a user keeps coming back and they have a toolbar plug-in that sends travel details to its boss someone will notice the traffic and check it out themselves.
User Experience has to be taken into consideration.
