These are commercial tools, but worth looking into for those with...erm...more aggressive SEO tendencies.

Haven't tested them myself, just putting 'em out there.....

Ralph, who I find is one of the few SEOs worth listening to, has this to say:

And don’t worry about the nefarious Nofollow tag - for one, it isn’t even fractionally as effective as the search engines would make you believe, e.g. Yahoo! doesn’t care about it at all, making your backlinks count most of the time anyway. But more importantly, well placed backlinks will also get you plenty of free traffic, more subscribers to your blog and generally more exposure.

Obtaining backlinks I would have to say, is the most important and the most difficult task of an SEO'er. It's time consuming and given the nature of how some people obtain them, can be unscrupulous in how they ARE obtained.. But apart from a content rich site that people WANT to visit on a day to day basis, what else can you do? or what other avenues are there? This is an open question, and I don't need the 11 words or less reply that some are apt to give that contribute zero to the topic and overall health of this forum. So save it. If you have something constructive to say, then by all means, the floor is yours.

I go with this principle also on a marketing view point - more backlinks, more exposure and more chances this exposure gets you traffic. So long as you avoid bad neighborhoods IMO

For SEO purposes, link building is really essential and really a time consuming process especially when you opt for manual link building and submissions. That is why I always advice to focus on having great, useful and relevant content as this will make your link building efforts easier in the long run. Site's will naturally link to you as long as you have authority content.
