A real test - URL with keywords in Google

Guys I just wanted everyone to know about my test which I undertook today.

1) I have an old established article without primary keywords which I am focusing on within the URL,
2) Today I added two keywords into the URL and made it a 301 redirect from the old URL to a new URL,
3) The article ranks 12-th for that phrase (2 keywords phrase) in google.com right now.

I await:

1) Re-indexing in 1-2 days,
2) Possible update in rankings in 1 week.

All in all, I will return here and will let you all know. I am personally wondering how it ends since there are people saying "do this and this", but I couldn't find any real numbers anyway anywhere.

Goodluck! URL with keywords in Google would be a great idea. I am using this technique and for me it is easy to rank if your keywords is in the URL especially for blog.

There are two schools of thought here. On one hand, there will be a group that will say it wont matter, and on the other hand there will be people that will say it definitely will work towards your advantage. Depending on the keywords of choice, I for one believe it will improve your rankings.

OK, here I bring first results. I can talk about 2 URLs yet, because the other ones haven't been alive 1 week at least.

My article from 12-th position moved to 5-th position ! The phrase is "aquarium filter".

Another article stays at the 2-nd position, but who knows if it's not gonna rank better soon. The phrase is "discus fish".

I think that I'll be wiser after 1 week because I updated totally about 15 URLs in order to expand this experiment.

The facts:

I removed the "?cur_lang=NUMBER&what=article&id=NUMBER" and replaced it with simple "?h=ARTICLETITLE". So the URL after "?" does contain keywords without hyphens (this is OK, G understands it) and what's more, the URL is shorter now. Also there is a 301 redirect from old URLs to new URLs (I mentioned it before as well).

I am waiting for more results to come soon . Will keep all of you informed.

OK, the final result is:

It works!

However, there is some time between re-indexing and re-ranking. This depends on your article popularity. Some URLs were re-indexed in 1-2 days and re-ranked in the next 7 days. But I also see a few URLs which haven't been re-indexed yet.

All in all, this technique is useful, it works and I have updated hundreds of URLs on my site.

What can you expect? If you are on the top30, you can easily move into the top15. If you're in the top20, you can get into the top10. And if you're in the top100, it is possible to get into the top30.
