I just turned it on. I'm on it now - and I installed a few things. For such little RAM, it sure is fast. It's faster than my other PC's.

HAHA, This is like asking someone if you should buy a FORD or a CHEVY or a CHRISTLER or an import.
Historicly you can get as good a performance out of a good AMD processor for less many than Intel. Im not sure why folks are pushing this AMD 64 bit processor so much. All the X86 applications that exist are written for 32bit processors so its doubtfull you will see the true potental of that processor until MS releases a 64bit windows for the consumer and other applications are written to take advantage of the 64bit processor.
A fast XP processor or a fast P4 with proper amount of ram at the correct speed will really perform side by side the same unless you start running benchmarks and counting the miliseconds.
Your true bottleneck is at the IO level at the hard drive level. Serial ATA drives are supposed to be faster with disk transfer than the old trided and true EIDE interfaces.

You lot definatly aint heard about the pentium 4 problem, pm me anyone if you want me to send the article or give you its current site (i am not allowed to post that site in here for very good reasons)
Re: John "price dont matter" - lol.
that is just like me, i dont give a damn about the price i just want the best of the best, i know how you feel. I would go for athlon. definatly. and a 2gb ram!!!!! wow. that is good. You're trying to build a "super-computer" as i can see. I was going to have a try but i found it definatly was not worth it "financially"
I spent over 3000 UK POUNDS (over 2000$ sumthin) on my pc 6 years ago ...... here are specs which wud now cost under 200$
450 mhz
10.1gb
128 mb ram
p2 450
now that was the best pc available 6 years ago, and no computer has wicked specs like that, and you know what i stil dont regret buying that computer despite the financial situation we were in.
My advice to john .... "GO FOR IT JOHN!"

This is an ongoing collaboration between AMD and Microsoft. AMD and Microsoft are working together to produce Windows solutions for clients and servers that leverage AMD's x86-64 technology as found in the upcoming AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Opteron processors. Windows products that result from this collaboration are planned to be announced at a future date.

(quote from a website). So, for windows (bold intended ) there are no applciations that need it yet, but he could still technically get it, and be ahead of the game for when it does come out.
(Although I personally, would rather have the 3200).

Probably, although 2GB of ram may never go out of "style" (for lack of a better word).

The Linux kernel has had 64-bit support for nearly a year.
There are several distributions which ave 64-bit version: Debian, RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE...

Being rich is totally different from being willing to spend money.
