Yes you can optimized flash site. But remember that SE's dislike Flash Web sites not because of their artistic qualities but because Flash movies are too complex for a spider to understand and spiders cannot index a Flash movie directly.

I agree too, meta data for on-page and link building for off-page!

It's sad that it's true.. flash sites won't get as much love unless you blend HTML and flash together.. flash has so much potential.. but then again.. I personally can't stand sites that are 100% flash and I know I'm not alone. How often do you find yourself addicted to a site with too much flash in their layout? Mostly, I just can't stand that my computer runs like poop the entire time I'm there.
Providing a user with the information they want as fast as you can is probably more beneficial than making the information look pretty in a flash layout.

Search engines doesn't dislike FLASH, they dislike flash navigations, flash content and headings. You can still use flash headers, even menus but you need textual menu too, so a crawler could navigate through your site.

Heres one for you to think about...
Question: How many FLASH websites or FLASH Intro's do you see in the the first 1-10 pages of Google, yahoo, MSN, etc for a search query...?
Answer: NONE
Reason: Obviously an indexing issue
Solution: Either don't use flash or when you do, keep it to a minimum, as SkyBlue has already suggested (Header - Banner - Presentation), But NEVER do a complete site in flash if you want to eventually make it to the first few pages in the SERP's...

When doing an all flash website, create an xml feed and very strong link campaigns... Perhaps Flex with their feeds will help solve some of the gap between flash and html... also, i forget what type of character text it is, but i believe there is a certain character text type that if you use in flash, the engines can read it... i can be wrong here though so dont quote me.

I think you're right.. I have seen some flash text get indexed. I don't know how they did it.. but I do remember that it was also on a page where I could highlight the text within the flash element. Not sure what they did.. I'm not a flash guru. I'm just good at noticing things
