Alexa Ranking Question

Hello all,

I'm a new webmaster and used to have a blog hosted on wordpress. It ran for about 5 months and I started to get some good traffic so I figured I'd move to a paid host. The new blog has been up about a week at the new domain. I knew the Alexa ranking would take a hit but I'm curious how to get it back up.

My old blog keeps rising. Essentially I did a redirect from the wordpress.com blog so I wouldn't lose traffic but the wordpress blog keeps rising in Alexa! It's now at about 300,000 whereas my new blog at a .net address is currently 5.7MM on Alexa.

Any tips, suggestions as to what I do? Do I just give it time?

Keep promoting and do the link building of your blog. Create fresh content, submit to blog directories, link exchange to a related site , social bookmarking and feed submission.

What an original answer Guinanie! I'm sure Brock knows these things, if not, then he hasn't done his homework, and Brock if you haven't done your homework, then see me after class... here is a quote to an article about Alexa:

As we have seen, there are pros and cons to Alexa ranking. The bottom line is that most people consider it valuable only for direct advertising. Given the fact that Alexa ranking for a site is calculated on the basis of how many visitors with the Alexa toolbar installed have visited that particular site, the results can be inaccurate.

Nevertheless, it may prove useful for sites with very good traffic that attract highly targeted leads, since Alexa focuses more on the traffic that Web sites receive rather than on links to it. As a Web site monetization strategy, we can safely say that Alexa ranking might be the right solution

Bottom line is, what are you getting out of your Alexa ranking? If the traffic gives you money, then don't worry about the redirect, just link to the old blog; but what you might want to do is run the blogs in tandem. Of course this all depends on what you are ultimately getting from Alexa besides Traffic.

Here is the full link btw, http://www.sitepronews.com/archives/2007/sep/26.html

Thanks Marth. Yes I've done the homework, etc etc. I guess I'm just slightly impatient. Technically the new blog has only been up for about 6 days.

I just started putting up ads, etc etc and obviously I'm curious to see what happens here.

So in essence, I'm concerned about Alexa in terms of value of advertising. I suppose I just have to wait. As is I get about 7K hits a day and I've heard of people earning much more than I do with way less traffic.

This stuff is all new to me so....I'm just trying to learn as much as I can.
