that all sounds like SEO being used with the soul purpose of marketing there Business

Indeed. Roofing is most often used to build a house, but it by no means completes the house. SEO = marketing? Naw. Where's the naming expetise, where's the talk of brands, line extensions, print advertising, pricing strategies? It ain't in SEO because SEO is about SEARCH ENGINES. (That's what the "se" in SEO stands for. )

The process of SEO provides a better platform for marketing via search engines, there are bound to be a few minor similarities, but not that many

You'll find pretty fast that I get involved rather deeply & opinionated on threads. It sure beats reading all the 1-3 liner posters that tend to sound like broken records all the time though huh?
Besides, i think deep debated threads tend to help the viewer a bit more than all the, ya, sure, good post, I agree, nice post, etc.. etc.. etc...
it gives them a bit of Thrill & excitement as we hash out our thoughts & creates more interest in the thread in general.

It was rude regardless of your status. No need for immature remarks like that when debating in a decent thread such as this.
Anyway, enough of this, back on topic

Right, I agree to an extent John, however they use SEO to aid in marketing them self through the engines. (My thoughts anyways)

In the long run this does not really matter, this debate
Bottom line is if someone wants to get top rankings you give him SEO
If you want someone to click the ranking text/link you give them SEM
Now once you got this visitor inside your site try to convert them and hit them with the best marketing you got.
Its pretty simple a person who has all those traits is a rare soul.
Most of us are very good at less.

I lay the blame at the hands of web designers...
In general they produce table based rubbish
Rather than doing a little bit of SEO on a site, the methods they incorporate harm a site i.e generic poorly written tags
Then to cap all that off, the slap their embedded hyperlinking sidewide logo on the site.
If this mess ever gets sorted the internet will be in a much better state. It will also allow webmaster to concentrate on marketing their own products, rather than worrying why their site is still listed on page 92

ok, maybe I should rephrase & say that SEO being a part of SEM is more of a combination of TOOLs (Techniques) used in marketing Efforts in order to achieve the ultimate goal of getting yourself into the eyes of consumer (With the soul purpose of Conversions).
Either way, My brain still reads it as Marketing related...

The on page factors these day are not carrying all the blame these days, lack of good linking is killing the rankings these days
I have tested both css written sites and tabled sites and they have never affected my rankings.
This year proper linking is everything.
Fixing sitewide sites are simple with the no-follow tag

Scorpion
I agree the ultimate goal is marketing, bottom line why are we in business - to make money, otherwise we have a hobby.
I am from a technical side of things, SEO is machine driven which deals with the bots and data crunching. So technical people like myself find it easy to get our heads around this.
Now marketing is a very subjective thing, since we are dealing with humans many technical people have difficulties with this.
To me this is the most difficult part of this business.
Its all a big picture and inter-related, but each piece is separate in skills.
So us techies in general have the most difficulties dealing with the human factors.
I never had any arguements in your philosophy, its all about the big picture.

For the educated Ed nothing is much of a problem, however most people never have a chance in this game, this is certainly down to the designer. I agree link building is key. My 2 main SEO's issues are adding regular unique content and sourcing high scoring inbound links.

Lately I have been working on my On site Optimization (E.G. Converting Images from png & jpg to .gif so they are optimal for speed / loading related issues, Adding more Sub-Page cross linking, Double checking and adding anchors where needed, eliminating Frames where I can, adding more contextual leading along with optimal supporting lead images, etc, etc,)
Been fun...

In this business I have to agree that people getting in first look at finding a webdesigner
Once they get their site up and running in almost every case the designer is no longer in the picture and the new interpreneur is left hanging.
We have schools cranking out these webdesigner's everyday and yet I see very little being taught about how the internet functions from the other aspects of SEO, SEM and the most important factor Marketing.
I know because I talk to new webdesigners all the time looking to make their mark. Including talking to professors.
The unfortunate issue here is the person looking to start a business on the internet.
Well the best we can hope is that they stumble upon a forum like this one and get their head straight and we are here to help them.
