What Defines An SEO Expert?
How do you define it?
This was a topic raised at another forum, but I'm curious to see how V7Ners define it.
http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/014963.html
Personally speaking, I'd say I know more than many so-called experts about how to rank a site, but not half as much as the guys who dominate the ultra-competitive money SERPs. I think there are very few people, worldwide, on that level.

I can't answer for everyone, however the price bracket would include (But not limited to) the Following: (In my opinion)
- Inbound Link Building
- Content Vs. Keyword Density
- Image format/size optimizing
- Image - alt/title Attributes
- Hyperlink - title Attributes
- (SE) Search Engine friendly Navigation
- Inner / Cross linking
- Content tweaking (as needed)
- Landing page support
- Outbound link management / restrictions
- Meta tag arrangements
- Engine submissions (if needed)
- Analysis / Troubleshooting to insure positive results for selected search phrases
- Continual Keyword Research & analysis
- and More.....
All these things are taken into account (& More) when doing a complete SEO campaign. As you can see just by the partial list, it can be quite time consuming.
Do i think that people who know the basics of what I posted are in the Expert Category? NOPE... I think basics is just that, basic & thats all there is too it.
The True SEO Experts never call them self an Expert or Guru, Thats a name others brand on them that follow their work ethics. In addition I don't think you are going to find a true professional SEO Expert that is actively seeking clients (They have plenty - If any). Besides, The majority use their skills to make 100% profits for them self rather than a mere 10%-25% off someone else. I mean think about it, really........ If someone was that good at SEO, why wouldn't they be doing it for them self "FULL TIME"?
In my opinion, the ones seeking clients are clueless in SEO Elementary school - The ones Focusing only on clients are in SEO High School - The ones that work with Clients & do their own sites on the side are in SEO College - And the ones that SEO for them self (With a proven track record & High success rate's) are the real SEO's.
Not to be mean, but, for those of you self proclaimed Guru's (Stick that in your pipe & smoke it)
(Note: I am in No way, shape, or form even close to being an SEO consultant - I am just a basics kinda guy)

I have many many top listings in google/yahoo and MSN but i never call myself an expert. Search engines can change the rules overnight and the game begins again!

Guess I'm a professional student then. An expert in this field is someone who can adapt on the fly with no consequence to their sites of their clients. But I imagine the experts lurk here but don't comment. They also do their own thing, and worry about their own thing and clients be damned. Say what you will but SEO is time consuming and if I'm good at it, I will do my own sites, rather than spend hours, days. weeks, and months, letting someone profit because of my direct efforts.

I define an SEO expert if he is working for himself and he gets higher income from his own site.
Experts can optimize sites using their own strategy and own knowledge.

SEO Expert for me should be not just good in terms of optimization rather in all aspect including in coding his/her client site..
And the traffic of an SEO Expert came from organic..
His/her keywords are in top without getting banned or penalized
SEO Expert always has something new at the end of each day

SEO experts are not born, in Jupiter. They are a normal human beings who could pull up good organic rankings (how ever competitive the niche be even the most challenging SEO field)! That's what I feel, and please correct me if I am wrong.

SEO expert does not rely on others. They do their work and apply the things that they learn through researching and asking.

A SEO expert is charged with understanding the various algorithms of the search engines and to design and or modify web pages based on the ever-changing standards of Google, Yahoo, MSN and many other major search engines.

I don't care about age or education or anything other than rankings. If you can get the rankings, you're an SEO expert. If you can't, you ain't. No matter how much you talk about it, no matter how long you've been in the game, no matter how many clients you duped into paying you.

While I do agree with you John, I am still a firm believer that the High majority of true SEO Experts are working for them self & making 100% profits rather than spending the same amount of time working for someone else & receiving a mere 20%-35% or a one time flat rate fee.

Someone considered to be a professional in the field Search Engine Optimization.
A person who has special skill or knowledge in some particular field; specialist; authority. And who provides Internet strategy and marketing services.

Agrees with John, thats what it all comes down to. Can you get that first page google ranking. My seo has been doing it for 3 years, but has never done it for his own sites. I finally got him to agree to a partnership where i would get the sites and he would get them into googles first page.
