Pages Selling Links Being Dropped?

Danny Sullivan article examines a potential change in how Google deals with paid links. Paid links may result in PR drops and site bans.

Is adwords not considered as selling links ?
What about banners on the site ?
Selling links is a part of advertising why should the sites be penalized for that.

I think Google have a long way to go to automatically detect websites selling links. All the cases that Danny mentions appear to be looked at personally by Google as they were flagged up in a number of very influential SEO blogs.

I just really find it unfair. They capitalize on adsense.. which is buying and selling of links.. they spread their ads alllll over the web.. then other companies think hey I could buy/sell links too! Boom, and now Google is upset? Maybe I'm looking at it wrong.. but it seems hypocritical to me.

Well in the end Google is nothing without the people (which is the world and the world of websites) don't like them or stop using them so if we can create enough fuss about the situation they'll have to either accept it or accept that people will slowly lose interest. If they penalize me for finding a way to make money with my own advertising scheme rather than their own I'll never respect them again. This is what I'm good at and if they want to snub me out.. mr super duper small time, that's really disrespectful.

if i have space on the site & i sell it, why should Google be worried about that. Are they policing the net?

Sometimes I feel like it. No offense to adsense but just removing their ads was a huge breath of fresh air to know I don't have to worry anymore. I know and understand why there must be rules.. but they must be reasonable rules. I suppose I shouldn't complain, they haven't done anything to me.

Maybe this is just the result of what google said about buying/selling links.

Well, the article does have 3 great points that I can't argue with:

It's my understanding that Google is penalizing sites that buy and sell links for better PR. If you sell or buy links just for traffic, it is OK. But how Google determines this, I do not know. So avoid selling and buying PageRank. Use the rel="nofollow" in sold links and all should be good...however the buyers might get upset...if there intent was to buy PR and not traffic.

That's the issue, it is difficult for Google to determine the sites that are sold to a user unless someone could report a site that sell links.

I can't see how almost everyone is so upset. Like someone said. Use rel="nofollow" on paid links and everything is fine.

Wow! Since this is my new marketing tactic that's a great idea. I didn't know about that. Can't believe I missed that HTML lesson... so where do I use that in my code? In the <a href> tag? Can you give a simple example?

I'd have to agree. Google is cracking down from their point of view on sites that are buying and selling links to affect PR or rankings.

So you would have to do what is mentioned. Selling links will still occur, but it will be more for the traffic that that site brings in rather then what the PR is.
