Linkbait techniques can be ineffective if you don't respect your audience.

This article makes a good point: the best linkbait appears natural. It is less about format, and mostly about being interesting.

Linkbait should be a natural indirect result of one's online of offline marketing efforts. However, as well all know, SEO professionals, as they would have us want to believe that they are, don't have patience, and thus anything that can get them higher organic rankings, "fast", they are willing to do.
