It's like choosing a newspapers or magazines. People tend to buy newspapers or magazines when it is pleasing to their eyes. If it is attractive and interesting to read then the readers will buy it. It is the same as websites. If people sees your website pleasing to their eyes then for sure they'll visit your site often. Use also some interactive animation such as flash or a gif made in photoshop.

One more thing... Don't over do it.. Because flash animation are hard to be crawled by spiders. I assumed you know what is the spiders..

yep! I do get a lot of returning visitors.. and I think you're right about this " another thing to consider is that a lot of people are coming to your site thinking about coming to australia, they are in research mode, rather than "buy in" mode." but that's what we do.. we sell products and we get paid from our services..

Perhaps you attract customers for the "wrong" keywords. Sometimes keywords seem to bring a lot of traffic but very little sales. Try to look for very specific keywords and actually produce sales. They are not that common as general phrases at keyword suggestion tool, but they are very lucrative. I don't think that neither design nor navigation may convert wrong visitors into buyers.

Actually you can do flash animation because a tool has been created lately to enable to make flash animation readable by spiders. But off course you should limit it too so that spiders can crawl with ease.

Two possible reasons - either your visitors aren't targeted or your content does not satisfy their needs

Have you thought about doing an exit survey, if you get this many people in you should be able to get some feedback on why they came and left

Well the first sentence catches your eye, at least for me. But it also get bored after. Your paragraphs I think need to flow easier. Plus if there not staying long, where are they coming from. Are you advertising in the right areas or enough in the right areas?
I agree with the others ad some type of design. tell you boss if he wants quality Visitors you need to be able to add something.
The question "why would I want to Go to Australia?" and "why is your company the best to go through" Needs to be able to be answered in first eye sight. within the first 10-20 seconds

I agree with Cherish.. Did you put statcounter/google analytics?? If not put it so. It will help you track visitors. You can also analyze or plan some strategy. For example, which country do your visitors came from? Does your visitors return to your site? Many strategies you can come up so to optimize your site.

I agree with this...it should be answerable by this question and of course the site must look attractive not just being informative...

40 to 50% bounce is not bad at all. sometime if you change things without fully understand why it happen would trigger disaster. so i suggest you check thoroughly on the bounce rates. for example from which sources that bounce rates is high like maybe 100%. maybe this 100% bounce rates are coming from referral sites that are not expected to give you targeted visitors. so no point of adjusting your page to cater their needs.
