You are right, but he doesn't mean you shouldn't do it...he just means you should be able to get results without using them.

The guy who wrote that, Michael Martinez, was already a respected SEO guy when I started out in SEO, even before Google came on the scene. He's a bit of an SEO legend if you ask me, and I read a lot of his stuff when I was learning SEO. I've always been grateful for that.

So much rubbish posted in the industry Mr Cutts was going on about Google disliking paid links for PR, yet if you look at Googles Enterprise Solutions page they charge $10,000 a year for a do-follow link.

That is his point of view. But what matters is how you do
your SEO thing on your own.

I think we all agree the Title tag simply and naturally reflects the content on the page but there is no harm tuning this to a degree to get better results for more popular searches. This is the most impotent part of on site SEO.

It would be nice if people here would give some real input or opinions instead of posting drivel. Anyway disregarding the last nine members (john, rank, businessservicesuk, peter and cool_guy excluded) who posted absolute nonsense, I like to chip in here and add something constructive, well, not really, usually my 2cents are never constructive as some will claim.

Most of that blog post was absolute rubbish to be honest. Granted there were some decent points made, but this is something I felt the absolute need to quote and share with all you link hungry spamming bug eyed freaks.
