What is the single most important factor in SEO for Google?

Backlinks? Content? Other?

I don't believe in 1 specific thing for SEO, it consits of a lot of factors which if co-ordinated properly gives great results

There is no one thing to do for SEO

on page factors
off page factors
url factors

each of these have multiple steps within them

There really is no one thing, but if you have to prioritize then I say
1.)Content
2.)Title Tag
3.)Anchor Text
4.)Backlinks.

The first thing for SEO is to do keyword analysis for the website. Then, According to that keywords and phrases, content should be written and other steps would be taken.

In my own opinion all the factors is need in SEO,,,,the content,keywords,on page,off page etc...all are they needed and important.

IMO, as what everyone is in favor... I guess there is no #1 thing for SEO. Let's just say, are you going to jump off an airplane without a parachute?

SEO is a process. And in that process involves every factor you need to have in order to get better rankings.

Backlinks are the most important thing in SEO.

Backlinks backlinks backlinks! Is by far the most important singular thing when it comes to SEO. Without backlinks you will never rank in a competitive marketplace.

If you want proof that backlinks are more important than content (yeah I know that without content it's difficult to get natural links) - type "click here" (without quotes) into Google and hit search. Adobe Acrobat is #1 yet "click here" does not feature at all in the content, H1 or Title tag.

I prefer the content. If you don't have juicy content, you will have a hard time to build links from those quality sites.

Ok, The general answer of - Everything is Most important & Just as equal - is just that, General. Of course many elements are required, however, being a Process, EVERY process has to start somewhere with something first & then the rest is added to it in order to reach as close to perfection as possible.

Research it - Step #1: (The first part of the process) This includes but is not limited to: Competition analyzing, keyword research / Analyzing, Content structure analyzing, Base product / Service research, Etc...

- Design / Layout between steps 1 & 2 -

Once analysis & research is complete for your field of interests you move on to Step #2: This includes but not limited to On page design / Optimization, Keyword Rich Unique content implementation, Sub-Page cross Linking, Navigation Optimization, Image Optimizing, Alt/Title Attributing, Meta configurations, Etc...

Now you are ready for - Step #3: (Now that you have content worthy of others interest) This includes but is not limited to: Off-page Optimization, Inbound link building, SEM, Advertising, Branding, Etc...

The list goes on & each one of the steps breaks down into sub categories for each element within the step.

So to answer a question with - It's all equally needed, well thats a given & a cop out - (Again, everything has to start somewhere)

This is My opinion of course compared to millions of others, adhere to it or take it with a grain of salt, Be your own judge & do some research...

You can have all the back links in the world but if your site does not have relevant content or is 100% flash you will only rank for your domain name. Its all about a good mix.

Hmmm I disagree. Granted you definitely need good content on a site but it is possible to rank for anything just through the right kind of backlinks. A site is nothing without content but this is a prime example of how flawed the Google Algo is: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...x=37&btnG.y=12
