SEO is a combination of onpage optimization and offpage optimization. Both are necessary for getting our website listing in Google.
Onpage means which process you are doing on your website like Meta Tag Creation, Body Content Optimization, Web Page Optimization, Using Bold, Italics and Underline in your anchor Text. Image Optimization etc.
While in offpage optimization you should to work for your website through external sources like search engines and directories submission, SBM, Article Submission, PPC, Press Release, Classified Posting etc.

You need to do both, that will work for almost all major search engines.

off site optimization is done by seo through link building strategies while onsite optimization is through keywords and meta tags creation. both are effective for seo.

On-page optimization -
involves modifying keyword frequency in the URL, Title, Headings, Hypertext Links and Body text. It may also involve reducing redundant HTML codes (aka cruft) produced by Web page authoring tools and restructuring the site to produce better linked and focussed page content.
Off Page Optimization
Improving your search engine page rank and increase targeted visitor traffic to your web site thru link building strategies, joining forums, link exchange and etc.

Anyone else care to repeat what's been said in a slightly different way, or drop links to their own sites? That's a no-no, by the way, JusenMujarJunior. You might want to take that link down.

Actually SEO is about those two, the on site and off site optimization. They are both a must in SEO because they work hand in hand. On site optimization are dealing with the elements on your site and their role in your rankings, for example, keyword density, title tag relevance etc. While Off site optimization are issues such as inbound links and the popularity of sites with links pointing into your site that you have little control over, but that still play a role in your rankings.

i think they both work hand in hand. you are never going to do fantastically without both, but if i HAD to choose, On-Site optimization is most definately the more important of the 2. lets face it, you can do all of the off site optimization in the world, but if the bots cant crawl your site due to site errors, coding errors, things that could have been put right in on-site opmitization, then your not going to do well no matter what you do

Onpage optimization is the first step before Offpage Optimization... Because SEO is a step by step process you cannot do SEO without the other...

On-page and off-page optimization are both useful ways to consider in driving more traffic to your site.
On-page involves using some actions that are applied within the site. It includes using keywords on the title of the page, on the meta tags such as title and description. It also involves putting some keywords on the alt tags, highlighting important words and using keywords as anchor text. Its main objective is help search engines to crawl your site and to achieve higher rankings on the search results.
Off page optimization involves gaining backlinks from other quality sites. It helps you to make your site popular and achieve higher page rank.

both are needed.. all said above are true.. in addition.. if you have good on page you can also have good off page meaning resulted to trusted and good site.. more traffic.. more sales in terms of e-commerce.., if you have poor on page.. it hard for you to get good off page.. meaning all the effort taken in to trash..

They are really both needed in optimizing the site... But the first thing you will do is to have an an-page optimization. Doing this properly will definitely achieve more traffic and to be recognized as a quality site by search engines. After this, you will do the off-page to obtain more backlinks and exchange links.
