I was going through this forum and somebody mentioned that google page rank is not improtant now and everybody is focussing on SERP.....but what exactly is SERP and how can we compare it with Page Rank ?
Does SERP also depends on backlinks ?

SERP is the page of results that a search engine returns. It includes links to pages that have been automatically discovered by crawlers, manually indexed by people or that are paid for by advertisers. It is one of the factor in determining a site's PR.

First of all, Page rank is still important! Chances are, whoever is passing that word is pushing the competition aside in PR so they can steal top spot. PR gets you to many places. With high PR, you can always sell your link for profit. How PR is being determined is not necessarily how popular your site is, rather it is being determined by how quality your site is to Google. That's why it is called the Google Page Rank.
SERP is the amount of listings that you have in Google. Yes, having more SERP gets you more traffic IF and only IF you optimize the right keywords. Having a lot of SERP on the wrong keyword won't get you anywhere so optimize your keywords wisely. Best of luck.

Now, this is the idea of people who takes really huge advantage and absolutely greedy. This is the main reason why people focuses on PR building instead of making a quality site. This is also one of the reason why PR update takes some time instead of a regular 3-4 months. This is why some sites, especially some paid directories penalized by google.

search engine results page, the Web page that a search engine returns with the results of its search. The major search engines typically display three kinds of listings on their SERPs. Listings that have been indexed by the search engine’s spider, listings that have been indexed into the search engine’s directory by a human, and listings that are paid to be listed by the search engine.

PR is still important, why?.. because this is how to determine

A search engine results page, or SERP, is the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query. The results normally include a list of web pages with titles, a link to the page, and a short description showing where the keywords have matched content within the page. A SERP may refer to a single page of links returned, or to the set of all links returned for a search query.

SERP is what brings traffic to your sites from search results on keywords that you optimize for and not PR - thus the reason why most webmasters opt for SERP
These traffic tends to be targeted and could convert into $$$ if you offer the right content, info, service or product to your visitors
