What is link farming?
Somebody mentioned the term "link farming" to me a while back and I'm still confused by what it means. Is exchanging links with websites that are not related to you considered link farming? Here is an article that I recently read that describes what a link farm is. I'm still confused though.

Thats a pretty good definition actually.
In its most basic terms: its website with a bunch of outgoing links on a page, offering little or no other content other than links
Hope that clarifies it for you.

I think the million dollar homepage got enough traffic from media attention to not worry about Google traffic.

Spamming link exchanges for example you have a page with 100+ links and none of the links related, you can be penalized for them
A good example is automated directory submissions, you always hear 5000 directory submissions for $5 or something similar. Most cases, these directories are infested with links.

Link farm - is any group of web pages that all hyperlink to every other page in the group. Link Farming is a form of spamming the index of a search engine.

Most link farms I am familiar about is creating websites, in particular blogs on unlimited subdomains on different servers just for the purpose of dropping links on them, this has been what I have seen as creating link farms.

Search engines recommend that webmasters request relevant links to their sitess, but avoid participating in link farms. According to Google, a site that participates in a link farm may have its search rankings penalized. Explained more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_farm

Link farm also known as spamexing or spamdexing, FFA (free for all)
It is a site composed of unrelated links.
Google hates link farms and consider it as spam. Once Google notice this one, sites would be remove from the index.

I hope you got the answer you are looking for. The replies are very helpful and easy to understand, direct to the point with no any further explanation. I hope no one post again just to rephrase what others posted.

The process of exchanging reciprocal links with Web sites in order to increase search engine optimization. The idea behind link farming is to increase the number of sites that link to yours because search engines such as Google rank sites according to, among other things, the quality and quantity of sites that link to yours. In theory, the more sites that link to yours, the higher your ranking in the search engine results will be because the more links indicate a higher level of popularity among users of the Internet. However, search engines such as Google consider link farming as a form of spam and have been implementing procedures to banish sites that participate in link farming, so the term link farming has garnered negative connotations across the Internet.

I agree with you. That's the basic logic of link farming - exchanging links with unrelated sites....
