Need to redirect domain with getting penalized

Hello,

I'm doing a site for a church that for some reason has about 6 domains, but an actual site on only one of them. They have promotional material already printed and distributed with 3 or 4 of these domain names. I figured the easiest way to handle this would be redirecting their other domains to the main one.

How can I do this without Google penalizing the site/seeing each domain as duplicate content/etc?

Yes, you need to use a 301 permanent redirect.

Make sure it is a 301 redirect, not a 302 and you will be fine.

Cpanel has a nice feature of the "addon domain" that lets you point to the same site without the domain being redirected ...

If it was harmful would they still have it in there after all these version releases ??

Google has been pretty clear about this. I stand by my comment.

However, you can certainly feel free to accept or reject it.

it is not penalized because once you fix you site problem your site will be listed again.

That is exactly why you do a 301 redirect.

Matt: If the content is truly the same, I would pick one domain and make the other domains do a redirect to the domain you prefer. For example, google.com could do a permanent (301) redirect to www.google.com, and then we would see that and generally choose the destination of the redirect. Having content from two different domains isn’t risky if they are in different languages (for example, Chinese and English), but if you have the exact same content on two different domains, it’s better to use a permanent redirect from the duplicate domains to a single preferred domain.

So the cPanel addon domain isn't a 301 redirect? I haven't played in that part of cPanel yet.

To verify that a specific method results in a 301 redirect being returned, do a header check on the page URL or domain in question.

how bad can a redirection affect the visibility of the site to the search engines???

if you have too many sites that has the same content, search engines may choose which one is the primary website and it might not be the right one.
Best to use domain pointers and 301 redirects.

I think the easy way to check is
if domain2.com > domain1.com
and domain1.com > domain1.com
in your browser window then a 301 redirect is in place

if its not a 301 redirect then domain2.com will stay that way in the browser window
