Yeah, Doogers, it takes much more time to realize results nowadays as you have to understand your traffic flow (what and why are users coming to your site for), your site's layout, your pages' metatags, overall design, inbound/outbound links and so much more than ever before. But stay with it and make many changes as you see fit and keep learning more and you'll get there for sure.
Also, if you have not done so yet, IMHO, it is a very good idea to go to the
Google Webmaster Central site and create an account. Then, verify your site as instructed after you log in. Then create a Google XML sitemap and upload it to your site's root. Then submit it inside your Google Webmaster account. And keep submitting new google xml sitemaps to your google webmaster account every time you make any changes on your site. And then, after about a month or so, your Google webmasters account will start giving you really informative and very interesting detailed and overall views of the traffic data coming to your site through google. And alot of that data you will never know about if you don't sign up for a google webmaster account and submit xml sitemaps on a regular basis.
Also, for even more detailed information on your traffic, have your ISP install a Webalizer program on your server. Its a free web server log file analysis program that, IMHO, is more accurate than anything else you can use for your site's analytics. The webazlier program can be downloaded from here:
http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/
and be sure to have your ISP change the default settings in the webalizer program so that you can see at least 5,000 referrers and 5,000 search strings. And there are other sections that you should have increased as well like Total Entry Pages, Total Exit Pages, and Total URLs by KBytes etc.
And the information from the webalizer program and your google webmasters account, will help you understand so much more about your site and your site's traffic. And you need to understand all of that as much as possible in order to realize really good results from your SEO efforts.
Also, I just found this very goog SEO tools site here:

Well, I hope that helps you somewhat. Keep going at it and good luck!
