I wouldn't cloak....
Cloaking, even for the few cases where it could be considered legitimate is a bad idea. It could be good in very short term, but if you want a site that will have strong SERP standings long term... Well, realize that the second you're caught you site will be banned.
I'd never recommend cloaking to an even remotely legitimate business.

Go ahead with black hat. Google doesn't care about people who cheat. My personal experience... I reported a lot of sites which have been using hidden links, hidden text, etc. but they were NOT penalised. The only reason why I am not doing black hat is that I am able to achieve reasonable rankings with organic SEO techniques.

I have personal experience with cloaking, keyword stuffing, etc, and the wrath of google. I have worked regaining several sites PR and getting them unbanned after using black hat SEO, it is always a waste. I wouldn't use it in any situation for a legitimate site.

Really? How about Search Engines using that technique? Are they also banned?
Look at Yahoo for example... Why Google keep on crawling Yahoo? What do you think?
Cloaking is not bad actually but it depends on its usage.....

I am all for seeing examples of "good cloaking" till then I advise against it. In fact Google specifically prohibits its use: http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=35769
Top rankings in search engines do not happen overnight and if you are able to do it through cloaking a competitor will report you and eventually your site will be vanished.
Take the time work on your site properly or hire someone to do it right for you.

SEO Cloaking obvious works. Does this mean that you should use it for your web pages? That would be very high-risk. Really few web pages that use cloaking can keep their search engine rankings for a long time.
Google has a clear statement about cloaking on its webmaster pages: "Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as cloaking."
Most websites that use cloaking are getting banned from Google and other search engines earlier or later on. It's only a question of time. If you want to get long term results with your website, you should avoid cloaking at all costs.

One good use of cloaking is to customise your website for users according to their preference, location, past action (for example recommending new products based on their previous buys), etc. My advice is if you're not using cloaking for this type of legitimate stuff then don't use it, you might enjoy good rankings for a while but once you're caught damage to your site will be pretty serious.

I think if you decide to go against the Google's rule in lucky case you will write the necessary script and test it before going live. You may find this resource useful to compile the script ihategoogle.org/?postid=508. I don't want to tell you if cloaking works or not works, but keep in mind that your site might be penalized , so if you decide that you will cheat try to remove every clues. Personally i use cloaking only for security issues.
