I used to run a myspace layout website and couldn't quite figure out how I got a PR of 3 or 4. Thinking back I realized I had exchanged links with every MySpace Top Site website. If your website is in a popular category you might just be able to get a high PR by finding all the topsites in your category and trading links. Here is an example of one of the websites I traded with:

I think it is because you were linked to a popular sits which are related with your site.,

Do Some More directory submission, more link exchange, article submission, Press Release submission etc.....

Initially, most websites with PR that are related to your site will not want to trade links with you. Also, most people are saying that general directories will not bring up your PR. Only niche directories.

yes you're right one indication of a quality and trusted site is from PR, one factor consider in exchanging links..

do link building,be visible to SE, increase your BL make your site friendly and interesting. (if your site looks interesting even without PR, it can boost you traffic and so this is one asset in link building).

it's obvious that if your site is linked to site that have good PR say 5,6
you will definetly get good page rank.

Maybe it's the linking from your visitors who spread to their friends!!! Have you thought of it that way? No, that one link isn't going to bump you from a PR3 to a PR4 lol....
