First ensure it is keyword optimised and then sumbit it.
If you are using several article websites be careful how you present your links as they can be show differently on different websites.

You may even write different versions of your article to submit to different article directories.

I think you need to check for its spelling and grammar first to ensure that your article will be accepted. Then after that, you must target your specific keywords related to the theme of your website as your anchor text to help your keywords get a higher ranking on SERP.

In addition, be sure to submit your article in the right category that is related to the theme or content of your article...

If your article related to any website promotion, then anchor your targeted keywords to the related page of site for getting position in search engines.

Another one, try to find out if your article that has anchor text was applicable for some article directory cause i believe there was some directory that your not allowed to submit an article that has an anchor text.

Yes, I agree with you.. So it's better to check first if the directory allows to put an anchor text to be sure that you can able to place a link to your website.

check the number of words and grammar, some directories are strict in terms of number of words and grammar

Whenever I'm submitting to multiple article sites I like to create slightly different versions of the article for each - this is easy & quick to do once you are used to doing it, just scan through and switch it around/rephrase it a bit.
I wouldn't recommend sending it to every article site you can find - a lot of them are utterly worthless and a waste of your time. I like ezinearticles, articleblast and articledashboard personally.

I think you are in the wrong way. First of all try to find out some relevance keywords for your site by keyword tracker or other tools. Now have some articles containing these keywords. Try to find out ONE article for ONE keyword. Finally drop these article to article sites from that to get backlinks.

I am also doing some article submission and what I do are.. after I finished my article, I''ll check the keyword density.. after that.. the spelling and grammar.. having a good article must have a good grammar and with a correct spelling.. through that readers will easily read and understand what's your article is.. after that I'll check how many characters and words are there on my article.. 'coz on what the other poster said.. some article directories are very strict..
indentions are also important but I am not sure about the alignment.. maybe because I am not checking the alignment of my article I just used the default which is the left alignment..
thanks for all those tips.. it is very useful..

Better submit your articles manually...
If your planning to use "Article Submission Software" be careful of using the right one because most of these softwares are inaccurate...
Manual submissions takes time but its more efficient...
