Also, a good idea is to post in forums that have to do with your site. This is especially helpful if you can't get backlinks from related sites.

Yes, register with linkmarket.net and a few others, and use your daily quota each day to request reciprocal links.
You really need an automated reciprocal link script too. I suggest the one on linkmachine.net. It requires PHP 4.0, but does not require SQL. It uses a flat data file. It's one of the easiest to install. You get a 10 day free trial of the full featured script, complete with its SEO tools. After the 10 day trial, the remaining functionality should be all you really need.
A few things you should know: - Find several sites like yours with huge links pages, and use the automated method for grabbing links from the Internet until you grab everything out there.
- Then fill in the gaps where it fails to grab the contact email address, as you are ready to send out requests.
- Send only about 10-20 requests per day. More becomes a management problem. Within a few weeks, you will have a couple hundred sites that have not replied to your requests.
- Make sure you select "open in a new window" for your editing settings. It tends to lose the URL when you edit the pages.
One more thing. When you open the linkmachine download, you may get a warning about it containing a trojan from your security software. It's not a malicious routine. It's part of the script's security feature to prevent you from getting by the 10 day trial.

I know that v7n is a community where we have some great publishers and webmasters who can really help me in this case.........if I narrow my question then I am interested in knowing a step by step procedure of building backlinks to my site.
It would be of great help to me as well as other publishers like me if you could share your valuable knowledge here.
Your response is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
I'll go for the 5 basic methods:
- article submission
- directory submission
- social bookmarking
- press release
- search engine submission
Certainly with a touch of my own web marketing strategy.
Regards.

I recently posted this on another thread, hope this helps.
There are several ways to build links. Here are just some of the following:
Directory Submissions - targeted links at high PR directories
Blog and Forum Postings - to high PR and frequently crawled sites
Social Bookmarking
Classified Ads
Article Marketing - submit to high PR directories, could also serve as link baits
Link Exchange - with relevant and authority sites
Link Baits - for organic linking
Etc. etc.

Link baits can be in the form of an article, video, etc. - any content that would attract other sites to link naturally to your site

It's real easy to get links. Look at it like this. If im joe schmoe and i have a website simlar to yours, what on your website is going to catch my eye, have unique content, cutting edge designs, free tools, resourse section, and get out there. Go to wherever it is people in your field like to socialize online at. Stir up some shit, get your name mentioned, do searches for your keywords, see who ranks well for them, send out emails to them try to do some recip linking with them. It's not hard, just do the work and research

The link developing is nearly turning into a new world because it is even getting bigger than the whole SEO world. The importance of the links is getting found out better day by day. A recommended approach is to use all of the items that have some shares in this world and not just concentrating over a few of them.

Yes, forum posting helps to gain more backlinks for their websites and blogs. This is the reason why most webmasters and bloggers join in forums....

The best strategy IMHO is to write content that hits the homepage of social sites like digg.com
