Yes I do feel few SEO companies charge a lot and the reason is, SEO market is fairly unorganized and their are lot of people who don't know what is on offering and whether the service is even worth it ?

Many times SEO companies with their sales pitch and reputation can influence clients. Though honestly, if the SEO company is delivering what has been promised than I don't see any reason why the client should complaint ?

But it is always good to search for "options" before taking on some service. And as far as Indian companies are concerned, I don't know ANY US/UK based SEO company which don't outsource the work to them(and why they shouldn't?) so eventually all the work is being done in India only

We ourselves have more reseller clients than actual clients. And talking of clients, I have to be thankful to V7n for providing a supercool client with whom we have formed great working relationship.

Regards

Exactly, There are a lot of issues when companies hire SEO for $2000 and recieve 200 directories submission service.

Before you hire any SEO you should see what they offer, clients, value on SEO market.

If you don't have 500-1000 dollars for Search marketing then good luck I would suggest doing your own seo and figuring out how to do it because any company that is good with seo is going to charge 200 plus per hour, I charge 249 per hour and have no problem getting it, but then again I've put one client in the top 5 for printing we was in the top 5 for website design tis like number 10-12 now I don't pay much attention to it any more plus I have people like webuildpages.com (Jim Boykin), seocompany.ca, and many other SEO companies refer clients to us.

But if you want a successful SEO campaign your going to have to put money into it or your time, but either way you'll still have to put money into it one way or another. When I first got into SEO which I had prior experience with the web its self for years I got into trouble for computer hacking and cracking when I was 15 and got banned from computers until I was 18, but it didn't stop me of course, but I never really got into doing it as production or thought of building a company until the last year and I'll tell you what its been one ride, but now things are moving fast and things are doing great, but I had to put a lot of time into it becuase I didn't have a bunch of money to start on which I'm making 10 times as much as I use to and I have 2 great designers, 3 link builders, and someone answering my phone during certain times and we just keep growing thats for damn sure.

I think 2008 is going to spurt big time

BTW as guarantees go they'll come with time just hire a reputable SEO company

I think if you are a small business, then you should learn how to do SEO yourself, if for no other reason than understanding exactly what you are paying for.

You should be able to do OK with lower competition keywords. I like to think of SEO that drives traffic as an additional employee that sells 24/7.

If you get to the point where you have to pay for SEO, 25,000 might sound like alot, but if you think of it as the cost of an employee, it is a relatively minimal fee.

Chinese SEO offers cheap alternatives

I work for a Chinese based SEO company and like the Indian companies we are getting a lot of work from Western companies because of cost saving that we offer over their local providers. I am not saying that this is the way for every company but is certainly something to consider when trying to get high quality/low cost SEO.

Warning... like every market there are good and bad SEO companies so it pays to do your homework.

The SEO costs can sometimes be determined according to the level of difficulties and the competitiveness of the keywords. Some terms might not even allow new websites to reach the older, giants.

I love SEO companies who point to example of great past projects SERP. Then you use the terms they claim to have great success with, and the page(s) they point to as past success are no where to be found. I don't doubt ANYONE can get limited short term success, and take a screen print of it. How do you gauge true success? i.e. long term success. Is website marketing is there such a thing as long-term results?

@nscases:
Sure there is - I can see sites that I SEO'd five and more years ago that still rank for the phrases I did for them. Take the Fish4 site - got to Google UK and search for cars, jobs or homes - (any of those single-worders) - I first got them those ranks about 6 years ago, and haven't worked for them for about 4 years. I don't know what they've done in the meantime (I can see they have retained at least a couple of aspects that were definitely mine, and plenty of new stuff too) but it wouldn't have to be much to maintain the ranks and they're still way up there.

The trouble is, how many websites go five years without a redesign? That almost always means a change in ranking if you don't consult an SEO about it.

SEO requires a lot of hard work which clients fail to understand. If you take out time to educate them about what all is required to get a site to the top of search engines then they might understand the hard work involved in SEO.

SEO isn't rocket science, agreed but it's not that easy as it may look to people. Submitting to 1000s of directories to get links may work today and give you few good ranks but in a long run it's not going to help. SEOs who don't have enough time to learn all the armors, can't implement them hence make up a bad impression on clients.

SEOs can't guarantee a top ranking. If any SEO does, then he is definitely the one to keep away from. Nobody knows the algorithm on which the search engines work, so no one, yes no one can guarantee a top ranking. It's just that we keep trying things to learn what works and what not.

In the end, I would just like to add that don't consider SEO as some simple piece of internet venture. It's just not a need it's a requirement, for your business.

it's true that some SEO companies charge too much, so be wise enough to check their credibility if it's worth paying for.

As for the results, SEO in not an instant process. I takes a matter of time before you see the results. If the company you've subscribed in is doing some effective SEO to your site then you'll probably see some improvements as soon as possible. But it doesn't end there, a continuous optimization process is needed for you to maintain your rankings and be competitive as well...
