Here's another fantastic free tool:
www.google.com
Actually, if you want to check out some key words, check out www.wordtracker.com for word search frequencies.

Which engines does it cater for? They mention Overture, Lycos and Teoma. Overture may be better because it provides a list of searchterms based on the one you asked about, many of which may not have been thought of, so it does suggest other searchterms. This software reports numbers only for the searchterm you asked about - right?
If anyone has used it, would you like to write a brief report on how you found it?

If there isn't one, it would take about 5 minutes to make one... Let me know if you don't find one... I'll make one for you.

Copy and paste your text into Word and use the tools>Word count to find the number of words, characters, paragraphs or lines on a page.

Hi Phil, actually I'm trying it out right now. It shows counts for the searchterm you entered PLUS related terms (top 100). The engines you can select are: Overture, OV.uk, Lycos, Teoma, Link Pop, Site Pop, and kPad. It seems to be a nice little tool, and definitely worth checking out if you have time. And it's free too!
