It refers to the searchers which don't use the popular keywords to perform a search, they usually either combine various keywords or add another related word to the main keyword. These searches doesn't show up in tools which measure the keyword search count as their search count is pretty low but when all of these searches in a particular niche is put together they can outnumber the popular keyword search count.

These long tail keywords can be gold, as they generally indicate that the searcher is looking for something very specific, instead of somethiing very general.

Example:

Work at Home (general)

Work at Home Doing Medical Transcribing in Detroit (specific)

What tips/suggestions can you give for success in the "long tail" but not primary keyword dominance. I have thousands of unique terms for long tail, but I am not seeing the success in primary keywords. thoughts?

I'd say content. Content makes for more wording combinations, but there could be something more effective that I don't know anything about.

your just trying to be specific here,. instead of using CELLPHONE use 6600 Nokia Cellphone,. your being specific in terms which is the users actually searched for,.

Long tail keywords is used to rank easily,.

I would suggest using something like the "Wordtracker Keyword Suggestion" tool. There, you enter the primary keyword that you are targeting, and it gives you the variations that have been searched for. Then, consciously include some of these in your content.

I'd agree with stacy regarding content. There is no such thing as too much.

A lot of the longtail keywords don't convert very well.

A good place to find new 'longtail keywords' is by checking your log files.

This one explains it well, the second example is a good description of a "long tail keyword search" also called as "Specific search"...

What are Long Tail keywords?

Long tail keywords are simply multi-phrase search queries which visitors use on search engines to arrive at your website. These longtail keywords are much more targeted than the general or main keyword topic and they literally embody a visitor’s need for specific information.

Here is an example. ‘Credit Cards‘ is the general keyword topic and long tail keywords within this niche includes terms such as the following:

* credit cards for people with bad credit
* list of low interest credit cards
* benefits of small business credit cards
* good canadian credit cards for students

These long tail keywords are actual search queries, therefore optimizing your site and creating content to match these search queries will allow you to attract visitors who search for information via these and similar search terms.

From Dosh Dosh...

just an info...a long tail keyword will rank high in SERP but has a low percentage in driving traffic.

It's true that it has low percentage in driving traffic, but on the bright side "long tail keyword search" brings a greater chance of having potential clients to our sites...

Targeting the long tail is a great way to start building traffic. Continue linkbuilding and build out to target the 2 and 3 word keywords.
