I don't have the toolbar installed, and we are usually in the top 10,000. (WF, not here.)

I wonder in promoting a certain site would help your ranking by putting it in an autosurfer?

Here's the ticket:
1. Email all your friends and associates and ask them to click onto your site every day for six weeks.
2. Visit libraries, office buildings, and anyplace that sells computers and click onto your site every day.
3. Pay Overture to put every one of your keywords in their #1 ranking.
...And you'll have a high Alexa rating!

I always go to the local Best Buy, and visit my site there.
(I figured out how to hack into their computer so i can surf the web.)

hmmm... another way you could increase your Alexa rating is to join a
bunch of auto-hit exchanges... You'll get a ton of hits even
though "nobody" really looks at your site. Makes for a good screensaver
kind of...

I haven't come across it. Would you explain what it is and how it can be "deadly", please.

I'd never seen one before either, so I searched on google:
http://autohits.dk/
seems to me, SE's wouldn't care, but your banner company might;) That's why the banner industry is working on a flawed business design, but that is a topic for a different thread.

I had a look at that .dk site. Without signing up, which includes giving them my website URL, all it says is that it done automatically. Presumably I just sit in front of my browser (or go and watch TV) and leave it to visit other sites, and other people do the same and visit my site. What's the point of that? And how can it be dangerous from a search engine point of view?

Presumably to increase your impression rate of your banners if you are using cost per thousand. Since the IP's will be somewhat unique its spoofing the system, as real browsers are loading from real IP's, but the ads are not being viewed. That's the use I see.
Wouldn't really hurt your SE ranking though, since SE's could care less on the traffic.

Beats me... I've never heard that they were deadly when it comes to
search engine rankings. All I know is that auto-hits are a good way to get
loads of worthless traffic and increase your stats, which I assume would
increase your Alexa stats. I don't join 'em, just know about 'em.

Some businesses quote their Alexa ranking when trying to sell stuff, so I guess it has a use for that. Apart from that, and when a website is up for sale, the only people being fooled by the traffic stats are the website owners themselves. I guess some of them like to be fooled though - they count hits rather than uniques.

I can't believe it, but I was speaking on the phone with a potential advertiser on my Suzuki site, and he said he was impressed with my Alexa ranking. I was quite miffed, and told him to read the Alexa Reviewed article on this site before he goes making judgements on the basis of Alexa rankings.
Absolutely rediculous.

I've just come across another one that works differently. It's at www.addme.com, it's called EzTraffix and it's free.
You have to sign up and make EzTraffix your home page. Each time you open a browser, a member's site appears in it, and you earn 1 credit which means that your site will get one appearance in another member's browser.
The difference here is that real people are viewing your site, and occassionally, one of them may just be interested in it. The .dk system is that nobody is viewing the site - it's just a browser moving from site to site, and the traffic is worthless.
I can't see any drawback in the EzTraffix system at the moment. The fact that only signed-up members will see your site means that the new traffic will be a comparitively few people, even though each may see the site many times.
I guess it might be worth a dabble. Some of those new forums that people have opened might benefit. The idea of operating a similar system for forum members here to sign up to is crossing my mind.
<added>
They claim to have 80,000+ signs ups. The don't say how many of them are actually making use of it (still have EzTraffix as the homepage). If anyone signs up, please let us know how it goes.

Hi Phil,
Those are called startpages exchanges and manual traffic exchanges.
They do work if used correctly. I'm currently in the process of writing a 3
part series on how to use them effectively. I finished part 2 and it's at:
http://www.imarketing-university.com...ng-part2.shtml
Part 1 is nearly complete and I have about a fourth of part 3 done. I hope
to have them completed by Sunday. I also hope to have that site ready
to go by mid-Nov. I plan on linking to these boards as well
Hope this Helps,
Ben Marroquin
P.S. I'm also the webmaster for two manual traffic exchanges at:
http://www.NothingButTraffic.com and http://www.HitRacers.com
I'm currently conversing with a programmer to make some changes to
my scripts... I want to add some new features.

Hi Ben(?)
Thanks for that. I read parts 1 and 2. Here are a few errors for you:-
From part 1
Those that don't succeed with this viable method of marketing lash out; they lay the blame of their FAILURE on the industry as a whole, a sacrificial scape goat, so that they do not have to own up to it.
If your (should be "you're") willing to work then You know that You must:
From part 2
1) Stand out from the crowd: Many people are out there promoting many of the same business opportunities, affiliate programs, etc.... Make your site stand out by creating your own HTP's (Highly Targeted Pages) with a purpose.
And a thought for you
Maybe I should have read it in another part of the site, but I would have liked to have read a description of the various types of traffic exchanges, what they do, and how they work. In other words, I would like to read something that teaches me about them, before reading about how to make the best use of them.
When the series is finished, I hope you will post a link to it in the "Member Articles" forum.

Thanks for the direction Phil.
I made part 2 first as a response to a question an online friend asked and I then shared it with others. Next, another friend asked me to write another article about traffic exchanges for his newsletter so I then decided to turn it into a 3 part tutorial series and put it up on my new site.
Now after reading your very helpful post:

You gave me the following idea; I'm going to turn this into a 4 part series so that each part is easy to read.
Part 1: What are Traffic Exchanges and how do they work.
Part 2: So Who uses Traffic Exchanges... and Why should I?
Part 3: Keys to Creating Highly Targeted WebPages for Traffic Exchange Success
Part 4: How to find High Quality Traffic Exchanges.

When the series is finished, I hope you will post a link to it in the "Member Articles" forum.

I'd be more than happy to and thanks for inviting me to do so
Well... back to work.
Ben
P.S. Yup... I'm always doing that with Your and You're and Their and They're...
