Quite easy - just install the Alexa toolbar.

...doing that isn't enough. You'd need to also visit your site!

...and the more you visit it, the more the number should go up (or down as the case is).
Alexa takes page requests into account, you see.

You said it. I couldn't believe what a dramatic impact installing the toolbar and visiting my site once a day had on my ranking. Just shows what an utter crock Alexis is. I'm still using the toolbar but I'm planning on getting rid of it at the end of the month. Then I'll go and see how my rank has fallen.

I confess to frequently checking my Alexa ranking, but it has no real meaning. I check 2 of my sites. One of them gets thousands of visitors a day (peaked at over 8000) and the other one gets a few hundred people a day. The high-traffic site never climbed above 70k or so but the low-traffic site is still climbing and is about to get to under 20k.
The high-traffic site is about accommodation and the low-traffic site is webworkshop - an Internet related site. It shows that the sort of people who use the Alexa toolbar are Internet oriented people and not a general cross-section of Internet users, so the rankings are meaningless.
Having said that, businesses do use the rankings to inform prospective clients how popular their sites are, so it has its uses.
I don't use the toolbar because it would cause false rankings and I'd rather see them without my intervention.

I think if Alexa does have any uses, it's for rankings in the top 10,000 (or possibly top 5,000) places. If you're in the top 5,000 I don't think having the toolbar installed yourself (as webmaster) would have that much of an overriding influence on the rating.
