Anchor text
Does varying anchor text help SEO and do the search engines take into account each word seperately.
For example would having the anchor text "mens clothing" help improve my rank for "clothing" on its own?

Exactly what you said is correct, say you have a Text Anchor of SEO Forum and you typed that into the search engine you want to find the best site according to your search, well if that link has been indexed then it will be pulled up on the engines when the site it's sitting on has been updated on the engines.
Make Sense? = Each link is indexed by it's self.

I think it would read as one,. it will improve your SERP in mens clothing not on mens or in clothing,. Better yet use only your target KW in you anchor

I think not because a keyphrase which consists of 2 or more words can't actually rank when only a part of a word from that keyphrase is searched. in your example, "mens clothing", it is possible that your site will be seen when "clothing" is queried but I doubt that it will be in a good SERP ranking, the way your site is found in "mens clothing" keyphrase. probably it is nowhere to be seen depends on the way "clothing" is used(anchored) on your site...

I see, so really it would be best to use your keyword alone in anchor text rather than adding variations to try to improve extended phrases too.

AFAIK, a variety of anchor texts/KWs will have different results (w/c is true) and won't effect each other at all.

nothing wrong with using different anchor texts cause it's a way of expanding the visibility of your site

If you continue linking to your site with varied anchor like "mens clothing", "boys clothing", "clothings for men", etc for a year or so, you will get an authority status for the keyword "clothing" and hence would rank for it.
This is the way people rank for single word terms. Once you get an authority status you need not to worry about links. What ever you put up will rank to the top!
This is the reason people tell you to stop running for links, rather make links run after you! Do something creative, do something out-of-the-box!

Yes I see, but to start with it's always good to get some links down as a foundation to build on.

yes off course, because in that key phrase you can target both mens clothing and clothing...

It would definitely be read as two keywords I guess... "mens clothing" and "clothing"

Yes varying your anchor text can help to target different search terms for the same page. If you do not vary your text you can focus more on a single, more competitive search term. The term "mens clothing" can be ranked for "mens", "clothing" and "mens clothing".

That will rank separately...I mean if you are using "mens clothing" in your text link, definitely you have a high search result on "mens clothing" than clothing but it will also help the keyword "clothing" to rank because it's part of a keyphrase...

You must vary your keywords so that it will look natural in SE view... Or I should say you are building natural link not artificial...

Yup, try to use different anchor text and not just focus on one keywords to increase the possibility of high traffic on your site.

Yes, I agree with you... They have separate rankings.

I had a quick thought - how many words in anchor text is considered spamming and detrimental as far as Google goes (not to mention that people don't search for that many words)?
I use up to about 2-4 words as anchor text, sometimes a 5-6 word-phrase when the text denotes some sort of action.
Just curious what is considered reasonable.
