Can PR0 Backlinks Hurt You?

My site recently dropped in PR but is getting better SERP rankings and traffic. While it's a pretty good trade-off, I can't help but wonder why PR didn't go up as well. I assume that because PR doesn't get updated as often, it probably still lingers on the beginning days of my site from waaay last year and probably assigns PR based on what my site was many months back. I also considered backlinks. My site is very unique as far as its content goes. It's an e-commerce site and there are only 3-4 competitors out there who do what I do. Getting niche backlinks isn't easy. I personally like to post in forums and v7n is a place where I'm also active, so I post my site in the siggy. But I can't help but wonder whether my forum siggies could've dropped my PR so I'm contemplating to remove them and just continue posting as usual. My site was PR3 and now is PR0.

Is it better to have no backlinks at all or have backlinks from a PR0 page point to a PR3 page?

I'm a bit confused about what to do because there just isn't that much out there that has to do with my business and its keywords, so backlinks are near impossible for me to get.

Thanks, as usual.

I think that depends on how related that website is to your website. But I'm not sure though.

Your PR drop might have to do with selling links or something, many website's PR have dropped because of that.

No, I didn't do that. It's a content-focused e-commerce site.

Not at all. Linking to bad neighborhoods can. Getting on the right page (page title / H1 / content / page with backlinks) on topically related sites with appropriate anchor text is the key.
See John's recent post.
http://blog.v7n.com/2007/12/10/what-...es-link-juice/

I will say that if you have 1000 backlinks from just a few domains as an example that the links will not benefit your site compared to say 1000 links on 400 or 800 different sites.

Don't worry about PR that much - you just need to build more quality and targeted backlinks as this will help your site PR and traffic wise. Doing good in SERP is a great thing. Most conversion come from keywords searched in Google IMO

I did notice some some of my traffic comes from pornographic sites. My website sells home decor items, so I have no clue how they found out about my site and I have no clue how to get rid of them. That's a bad neighborhood link, isn't it?

Any advice on how to get rid of them?

If they are not reciprocal links, I don't think they hurt you since you have no control over who links to you. Surely Google is smart enough to know this.

You bleed PR to internal links, not to external links. But the thing is that PR is not static. The sites you recieved your PR from in the previous update may have tons more links now so there's more sites for them to pass PR juice to. Or they may have dropped in PR so there's even less going to your site. Anyway, PR is not something worth worrying about.

You started a new point there. I remember a couple of months ago I was submitting to near empty directories, so they probably were new at that time. Now that my site's been there for a while, more and more people have found out about those directories so there's a greater share now. That might explain why my PR dropped.

the PR of the site will not hurt a specific site, ever...its entirely base on the site that you are linking with. better check them if they are a bad neighborhood or penalized or banned. then after you checked them all out, be sure to delete the link to that site immediately.

it depends on the sites linked to yours, it may hurt if most of the sites are not related to yours and that might banned your site.

SERP and Traffic are much important than PR, that's all I can say...

Are you sure you'll going to delete your link immediately? What if your site is linked through some penalized directories? How will you going to remove your link there? I'm pretty sure that you'll have to contact first their admin or those people who are responsible for that one, your lucky enough if that directory site is a human edited dir.. But if not, well then pray for immediately response.. Anyway, you got some nice concept there! Keep it up dude!

I think you are referring to inbound link here...because you can actually delete immediately the link from your site to that directory you are referring as far as we all know...

My answer to the question will be NO.
Never mind whether the backlinks is from pr0, unrelated sites, sig links, dead sites, porn sites, maybe it does not help you as much, but it will not hurt you.
Otherwise anyone can do harm to competitors by just linking to them.

Someone earlier mentioned about google banning your site for bad backlinks,
that's only when you do link spamming, eg having thousands of backlinks in a small period of time say a few days.
That will trigger google algo to think you're doing something fishy and penalise you.
But if your site is really getting naturally famous, don't worry.

Just focus on getting more links, especially with your targeted keywords.
In fact, even low PR link from unrelated sites will help you.
