The importance has never been solely on links, but more on anchor text of links.

if this is true, how much do directory links help if the title of your web site isn't keyword heavy....going with the idea that you want the title of your web site in the link to keep from spamming the directory in the first place...

I believe that a solid link foundation is made of of many, many anchor texts and links from many sources. Directories help get contextually relevant links from a variety of IP's and domains.

You have a problem with basic and simple? I always figured basic and simple were good things.

No.. But with the recent changes in the algorithms, in the past months, I do not recommend site-wide links. AT ALL.
If you have the oppotunity to give (issue a site-wide linkin your website) or receive (receive a site-wide link from another website), just pass the opportunity. You would be much better without it than with it.
I can only recommend a site-wide to someone, if the total number of IBL's gained from that site-wide link, cumulates a maximum of 20% from the total unique IBLs of the websites.

Site-wide = links to an external page from every page of a site.

Yeah.
Site wide links used to be all-powerful. Not so much any more.

Have your proper Business Title and Descriptive Keywords in the Anchor Text, if Submission Guidelines permit.

No, just the biggest factor. I recommend reading the first post in this thread.

Very well answered John... When going for the directoy submission just get the category right... the category that closely relates your business... then add them with a proper anchor text as title... and a good description about your site... repeat these for various class directories... and one thing more that you should keep in mind to use different anchors... dont just get one anchor text everywhere... that may look odd to the search engines... be natural and be cool... :-)
Take care

Great post but i will must say that to increase traffic to your site you must have rss on your site and submit it to blog directories you wil see a good change on search engine too

Paknaz, most websites do well without rss feeds.

Yes... absolutely agree with John... The only thing you require is that are you giving your visitors their run for the time they have given to find your website... if that being done then there is always a possiblity that they will buy from you ... well that is the thing you would want them to do... If your site has nothing much to offer then all you SEO stuffs to rank #1 is wasted!!!
So first make a website that solves a problem that the people face and then give them the solutions.. the product that you offer...
Take care
