If your referring to CPC then it can be important. It's all up to your individual needs and business model. If you build a site just to put up CPC ads then it's probably important.
If you run brand recognition ads then it probably doesn't matter as much. It's really up to the individual and the business model you use to make money.

Click-through rates or CTR is important measuring the success of an online advertising campaign. CTR is obtained by dividing the number of users who clicked on an ad on a web page by the number of times the ad was delivered (impressions).

On some/most PPC networks ads with high CTR will also cost less per click.

For traffic through search engines, I'm willing to pay up to $.15 a click and for less targeted traffic, I wouldn't pay any more than $.05 a click.

CTR means how often visitors are clicking on an ad (for example a 2% CTR means that for 100 pages displayed you will have 2 clicks).

CTR isnīt just important for PPC but also for SEO. Itīs like asking how important is to get traffic to your site. The thing is that on PPC a low CTR will end you paying a higher Cost Per Click, as Google Adwords, Yahoo SEM and Microsoft AdCenter follow the same formula: Max CPC x Quality Score = Position. And the quality score is mainly determined by your CTR.

CTR is important because it allows one to measure the success of a campaign and adjust both the ad itself. I don't think that CTR is a measure of website content or SEO. In the end, people can't judge your website until AFTER they've clicked. That's something that the bounce rate and avg. time on site can do, but not CTR.

If your referring to PPC, CTR rates are by far the most important on what determines your quality score, spending is the biggest factor on getting low prices.
