Blog commenting is a good way to build backlinks, comment on blogs that you care about and are related to yours, then you will get some traffic that is targeted and a few links out of it. By doing that you are contributing to someone else's website and may also cause them to contribute in yours.

I can't understand how it is possible to post links in blog comments at all? I think that it should be under moderation at least.

Actually Hafsoh has a point in doing blog comments the one one who do the comment is not the only beneficiary it is the owner of the blog as well...if the comment posted is related and valuable to the topic...

It is possible to post links on blogs...
Some Blogs do some moderation on comments but some don't...
So the best thing to do is to post comments related to the topic and does make sense, so it won't look like you're just spamming...

Most blog platforms use "nofollow". There are many speculations about how search engines index this links... I would say no! It doesn't really help to rank well.

Ofcourse it can! So long as you post relenavant, useful and informative comments. This will entice other users to check what you have to offer in your site.
If you want blog posting to help in your PR building, search for "dofollow" blogs similar to your niche. Just take note on what I mentioned previously on the quality and usefulness of your comments.

blog comment is only good for getting traffics, most has no follow and some needs to redirect to your site.

Definitely agree with you on this. Also in addition to what you said, commenting on blogs is also or could be considered as a community as well...

Yes, it can but not that much...
It depends on how you write comments...
If your comments makes a lot of sense and not just saying "nice post" or "nice articles", I guess readers would be interested in visiting your site...

those are the value inputed in the attribute of a link called "rel"...a link is do follow by default, "follow" values are for bots, if they see rel="nofollow", the bots will not go through the link where it goes to and will not count as a backlink only for PR building...well, "follow" attributes aren't literally followed by Yahoo, but Google does...
