As far as SEO and traffic, does it really matter where your blog is hosted, on your website or on wordpress, blogger, etc.?

Yes it does! blog accompanying your site will help you to have more indexed pages and can better serve you to promote your site, i.e. growing blog will increase the visibility of the site directly. On the other hand if you get a blog at wordpress or blogger for promotion purpose, it may also work fine as free blogs get faster indexing, but the thing that matters is whether it diverts whole of its traffic to your site or not. Of course it will not divert whole of the traffic it gets, but a part of it, and hence having blog on free platform will need double effort.

Well, that's what I think, some experts may give better advice!

If you can afford then always host your blog using your own domain name and hosting. It agives you maximum flexibility and returns imo.

It still depends on how you optimize your blog...
Doing proper SEO for your Blog is the best option you should do whether you host your own blog or its hosted by others...

Watch some free hosted versions as you may find it harder to export or backup, such as is the case with blogger, where its tough for a relative tech beginner to export or backup posts. Not to mention hosting it yourself gives you MUCH more flexibility when it comes to SEO growth, link building and revenue generation.
