Question Is there room for another search engine?

Hi Guys,

It is crazy at the office and one thing we do find amusing is when a potential customer calls up and says: 'hi, my name is Paul and I would like you guys to build me a website like Google'.

We are naturally polite and say, 'hi Paul, how much are you willing to spend?' whereby Paul takes a deep breath and says with utter sincerity '£345'.

What I am driving at is if Microsoft cannot achieve the dizzy heights of Google in market percentage in the search engine world is there ANY chance of another company ever taking on Google and bettering the technology or is this now it.

I would like to take a peek 15 years into the future because the CEO of Microsoft seems to be no push over and I am interested as to weather we will all be using Google Desktop / Google Servers / Google Workstations / Google Office OR will Microsoft come out of its slumber, shack off its reputation for stitching people up at every pound they can take from our sweaty palms and put up a decent fight?

What say you, is this it or is there a chance for change?

As always we look forward to your posts.

Surely, there is a room for another search engine. Microsoft haven't been able to build a search engine which can compete with google because they don't generally win over users for their products by making their product better than the competitors, they generally use their monopoly to crush the competition.

Well..........I think ther's not but if it is developed then its really hard to survive for new search engine because yahoo and MSN have enough good features and qualities but they are still far far away from Google then you can guess what's here on the web for a new search engine.

I think there is room for more search engines, ones that do things differently, get a core of supporters in a niche and then grow into a well known site. Could it complete with google, I doubt it but there is still a huge market out there who would be willing to use an alternative.

Google is following a monopoly to maximize their revenues through Google Adwords. This is something which is making Google lag behind other search engines like Yahoo, and MSN.

Google became popular because of its latest/accurate results. These days Google is surely aiming to deliver accurate results , but their ranking filters and algorithm can eventually hit back Google like a Boomerang.

They are trying to maximize their Adwords/Adsense revenue, and to enable this they are deliberately holding back ranking of several useful websites. Whenever I have to search for some latest news, free software, free script etc etc, I have to rush immediately to MSN since it delivers latest results. Surely Google has to wake up before it is too late. Their useless filters are making life miserable for genuine websites/forums to score top rankings on Google. Moreover it is making life miserable for search users by restricting their search results depending upon IP address of websites.

If you are searching for some new stuff then try searching on MSN. I am sure you wont be dissapointed with results. Surely Google needs some hard spanking.

10 years back nobody knew Google, but everybody knew Yahoo. You shouldn't be surprised if you see a whole new search engine emerging from outers-space

Meanwhile I have found several other search engines like Dogpile which are very accurate and effective, but still the popularity factor of Google is making other search engines look effeminate.

Nobody knows, but surely the current situation of stagnated results on Google and increasing Adsense/Adwords fraud can give rise to a whole new search engine .

Unless something innovative that blows people away, IE audio, video search perhaps? Hard to imagine it now, but I'm sure it'll be the future because just look at how lazy we already are?

30 secs of waiting and I'm already bummed, lol....

It's the internet, anything can change. About Microsoft, those guys have been confused for a very long time. Just look at Vista, if they don't get their act together their fall is coming fairly shortly.

The web is a very vast network - surely there would come a time when a new and better search engine will take Google's place - but it won't be cheap to beat Google
