Yahoo and MSN obviously use different algorithms than google so this is a very good question.
The study of Yahoo and MSN seo is not nearly as advanced as that of Google. however most of the typical Google best practices will show significant results in MSN and Yahoo.
MSN use to give enhanced placement to new sites and sites with updated content, I think they have dropped the enhancement of new sites for the live search, but it appears that dynamic sites still receive some sort of bump.
The big thing that MSN is wanting to get into lately is more localized search results, so what I would do with competitive keywords is try to work in some location terms throughout your site along with the keywords. If you overload it of course it will likely have a negative effect, but looking at your audience just try to get an idea of where most of them come from and go from there.
Above all like google backlinks are still king. Just make sure you have a ton of inbound links and you will be doing good.

Yahoo and MSN weed out spam sites (they like businesses that actually have something to sell or a real service). Google goes after the young guys looking for finance, education and entertainment. Google falls for some pretty easy tricks.
Selling something besides ads? it's easy to get top listing in MSN and Yahoo.
MSn loves to sell to women (they know that 75% of online purchases are made by women)
google linkbacks are is myth used by ignorant seo guys.....
It is also a tool by Google to artifically increase adword prices......
don't bother unless you know nothing else....

Concentrate on Google, then both Yahoo and MSN's rank will accumulate as well.

I read an interesting analysis of Google, Yahoo and MSN at : http://www.seohawk.com/seo_articles/...engine_seo.asp
This article will help you understand difference between these search engines, and how do they perform.

Both Yahoo and MSN rely heavily on IP addess of your website.
If your site is hosted in Germany, then you have slim chances of scoring on top of Yahoo.co.uk and MSN.co.uk
Meanwhile, do let me know your url ?

Yahoo ignores "nofollow" command...this means that those blogs that uses "nofollow" are still valuable to Yahoo. Leaving comments to those blogs still counts for your Yahoo optimization.

I've noticed that Google and MSN are highly different in calculating SERP rankings...
Most sites that have decent rankings on Google does not do well in MSN...
