Not really to be honest with you....
Write your description for users not for search engines, seriously.
If you want to rank build links..

RE:
i guess, in these days, description is more important for Google point of view. I experienced with my sites that if I include more density in description rather than in title, then it helps a lot.

As far as I know description tag appear on the SERP as short description about your web site veruy often. Pay attantion on that while creating.

Description tag will not help you with ranking on Google or MSN, but it will with Ask and Yahoo. So optimise it, and also use it as call-to-action to get people to click on your link in the SERPs.

So, it means Description tag is useless in terms of Google and MSN rankings?

Yes, in terms of rankings. But useful to get people to click on the link. Keywords in the description tag are still bolded in the SERPs so that confirms to people that your page is relevant. So still put your keywords in. Get some kind of sales message, or say what makes you unique in there as well.

But I think, Keywords in Description Tag will help in Rankings because of their relevancy and as you said "Keywords in the description tag are still bolded in the SERPs so that confirms to people that your page is relevant.".
And there are two main things for rankings - Content and Links. What you think?

Do an exact search ("in quotes") on a unique description tag - you won't find the page it is from in Google SERPs.

Yes, it makes people want to click on the link, but this doesn't affect rankings.
Content and links are the main things to concentrate on, no doubt.

yeah! you are right. We can't get the description content in Google SERPs but still bots are reading it and showing it in the Search results. That's how it is so confusing to me.

In description tag just specify the theme of website in as few words as possible. It is also important from user point of viewapart apart from search engine point of view. Do not define too much keywords in the description tag, it could result in spam.

This tag allows you to influence the description of your page in the crawlers that
support this tag. Although it is questionable that keyword use in this tag has any
influence, whatsoever, in affecting the rankings, it is more important for stimulating
user interest and for getting people to click.

IMO Description Tag can indirectly affect SERP rankings...
A well written description can attract more visitors to click your site and it increases your Click Through Rates(CTR)...
If your site is ranked #5 but receives more clicks or visits than those sites in the higher ranks(#1#2#3#4), Google might consider that your site is more relevant than those sites ranked higher than yours...
If Click Troughs + Relevancy are taken into account by Google, then there is a possibility that Description Tag can boost your SERP rankings...

What your saying is the description snippet, this are the description of the site written below the links when you search in SEs...description tag usually became the snippet...It has nothing to do much in ranking but it helps in a way that it gives brief description of your entire site for the visitors...

In terms of ranking, I don't think that description tag can affect your rankings but i'm pretty sure that it can help in driving traffic to your site
