I don't see this as a strong factor that would blow SEO away...
Getting more click is not an indication of a quality site, its more than that...
SEO consider more important factors in order to deliver viewers with what they need...

It can never be replaced since people are searching for something...

'always' and 'never' are two words I rarely use when discussing technology and the internet... But I hope you are right.

I think that the SEO Practices of today and yesteryears will go extinct, but in the wake of this process, I think totally new SEO practices will emerge. SEO and Traffic building will always be big business, but much of the current SEO teaching and practice is preached by snake oil salesmen, who give other SEO experts a bad name, and leave many people with a bad taste in their mouth.
Right now the business is changing, there is no dieing that fact, but many of the SEO gurus are a dieing breed who refuse to change with the times.

I think maybe the search engines out there will adapt stricter optimization, and maybe penilise sites more than use directories. In the furtur results will probably become more accurate towards the content on sites, rather than the amount of backlinks the site has.
SEO will always be there so long as search engines exists. SEO is just a matter of making your website appear as best as it can on search engines and as high up. At the minute to do this is make your website related to it's content, backlinks related, articles related. In the furture it might be something different, like the more accurate content a website has the higher it will appear on the list.
Things change, and SEO will change, but SEO will never die out.
Mark

It's already being rumored that to much SEO on page optimization hurts your search engine ranking. I think this will become more of an issue, as time goes on. Search engines don't like pages that are geared more for search engines then for a visitor, so I can see them doing away with pages that are to focused on SEO.

I don't think it will ever die, but for the first time, I could care less about Google's PR.
I'm sick of jumping thru hoops, and it means nothing as long as you are found in the results page and have relevant content.
This time last year, I would be spending hours on SEO, now...It's easier to gather good content and information, and just let people link to me naturally.
If they do...they do....and if not, oh well.
I have made more since I stopped caring, than ever before.
