Is SEO a dying practice?
I've been reading a lot of newsletters that are predicting the end of the SEO profession.
With Yahoo! and Google both getting into the social media arena, does that mean SEO is dead? Will search engine optimization be replaced entirely by social media marketing? Already, you can see people online who succeed primarily from their social marketing efforts, with their SEO acting as a supplement to the social marketing. Will that the trend of the future?

I don't think so. SEO will be still important as long as search engines exist.

SEO won't die until googlebot stops crawling websites.

There you go... Internet Marketing that uses SEO will always have a home...
And search engines don't need SEO people; I think it's the exact opposite. Without SEO, the search engines would only have to worry about tweaking their natural results.

I don't think so. As long as search engines base their search results on their changing algo, SEO will always be needed.

SEO is not a dying practive. The search engine algorithms keeps on chaging from time to time. Earlier a website used to get promoted just on defining the appropriate keywords and meta tags. Meta tags required a lot of workout and But nowa days its the conent that is the king. Then its the emergence of social networking sites that gained importance.

I don't think so, I would agree with you if all search engines are gone. If their is a search engine SEO will still be alive.

Good points, but if an engine starts using user behavior more and links, content, etc less, don't you think that might be a problem?

I should state that I'm playing devil's advocate; I'm an SEO pro that wants to explore the arguments against my industry.

Sure...
You'll notice that Google is tracking everything you do with cookies, so sites that get clicked more for a certain term tend to climb the ranks faster for that term. If this trend continues, links will have less weight and 'habits' will be as powerful as content.

Right, but what if 'organic search' is replaced by something else?

If I understand it right, you're saying that a site not a link that get clicked more will rank good or faster in SERP.
are you saying that an anchor text from site that get a click often will rank faster than the site where the link goes to? (LOL...I do hope that you understand what I understand with your post.)
