The point is that, without knowing what your goals are, and how your experience compares with those of others with similar goals in similar endeavors, bounce rate is of little value.

Most of my sites are under 20% (Homepage bounce). That's the bounce rate I truly focus on. Homepage bounce & New Visitor Bounce really.

My bounce rate dropped from about 70% to under 50%. Using only one metric can be misleading. Even at 50%, my time on site had gone up from under 2 minutes to almost 7 and page views have increased as well. My Alexa ranking is up by over 8 million this year too. If I only looked at bounce rate it would look like I'm doing poorly, instead of quickly climbing the ranks.

- The post is not in any specific context.
- There was no mention of any change in content.
- Bounce rate can change even with constant content.

I'm not talking about my overall bounce rates. My bounce rate is much higher with long tail traffic & visitors that enter on pages other than my Index page.
I use Analytics (with custom reports) to track my sites. In my post I was referring to people that bounce on the home page. I like looking at exit pages and entrances and new versus return.
As far as proving it goes; it's an interesting question but not sure why I would nor why you'd ask. It is what it is, just a reply not a solicitation.

My clarification?
If you refer to my post re. "proof," that was about a different member's post.
If not, I'm lost.

No problem.
Just good to know that I'm not yet totally spaced out.

My previous project had around 40%. But, the site was performing not bad at all. We were selling products, the site had good visits and conversion too.

I am currently working on a wedding planning website and am pleased with the bounce rate. The overall bounce rate on the website since june 2009 is 14.36%.
The SEO & SEM campaigns running for the website is highly targeted and this is precisely the reason why the bounce rate on the site is such.
Also, the content on the site is truly great and the update frequency is amazing. All of these factors have contributed to the numbers i have for this site

I feel bounce rate of 40% is sustainable but this can be lowered more if relevancy is taken care of and links build are highly relevant to the website.

I think your bounce rate depends on on the purpose of your site. If you have tons of content, it's obviously useless if people never make it past your home page. If you have a home page and a second page that includes a PayPal button, you shouldn't expect 70% of your visitors to buy your product.
There is no hard and fast rule.
