Different types of websites require different types of bounce rates. I run an ecommerce website and I do have a landing page. My goal is to get them to the purchase page. If my landing pages are having problems with high bounce rates that is a problem. However, I expect a higher bounce rate on my purchase page because naturally people are curious about the price, and even a 5% conversion rating would be good in my opinion.

Sometimes a high bounce rate is a good thing (affiliate sites - you just go to the merchant's site).
After working on sites for over 10 years I have yet to see a site with a bounce rate lower than 20%. Most are around 25-40%. Some of the really good sites have 50% bounce rate, so it is hard to say what is good or bad. It really depends on the site and the target audience.

If you want to reduce your bounce rate, the easiest way (in my experience) is to split up your page content across 2 or 3 pages. This will force someone to click on a "continue reading..." link to finish an article/tutorial/editorial and this will reduce your bounce rate significantly.
That said, it won't necessarily make your website any better.
As mentioned above, bounce rate doesn't necessarily mean you have bad content... maybe the reader was satisfied with the info they got on that ONE page and has no need to dig deeper.
Cheers.

I think you should only worry about a high bounce rate if you have e.g. online stores or if it's an affiliate site. Many sites that have been optimized by keywords and keyphrases will obviously have a high bounce rate from people finding their site through search engines.

I agree with John. It just means visiting one page and then leaving. My Political site has a bounce rate of 45% but most people come from Google for the candidate platforms and leave after reading the candidate they wanted to see. The other part click on the other platforms. I don't see anything worrying about it unless you have a really high bounce rate when there is no way your page could have satisfied what they wanted.

My bounce rate was around 30% until I started submitted my blog comments to social sites. Now it bounces between 47 - 80%. Since stumble my biggest traffic driver, I believe that explains the large bounce.

After completing more than 10 good retail sites, an average of 17% bounce rate on the best one, I would say if you're selling anything then a bounce rate of more than 35% is worrying- you're not getting enough people to look aaround your shop, so that would tell me it's too diffiicult for them to navigate, however if your site is just a callng card site then any bounce is fine because they could land on the page they want first time- simple as that...
The way bounce rate plays with peoples minds is mental! If you're selling something then you want a low bounce rate, if you're not and you're providing info then don't bother looking at it, just assess the traffic and where it's coming from and look at average TIME per visitor, that's a better measure.

on my POV higher than 70 percent is bad but anything below 60 percent is good.

Honestly, this is new to me... the bounce rate thing...
But based on what I've read about this forum post, bounce rate is the time that a visitor stays in your website (correct me if I'm wrong)...
My questions are:
Which is better? Having a high bounce rate or low bounce rate?
Does it really affects SEO? If yes, in what way(s)?
I will very appreciate your answers. Thanks!
