Search engine optimization and Bounce Rates
Google is using data from wide variety of resources to decide seo rankings of your website. Now suppose that your website is ranking on top but you have a high bounce rates. Then google can use this data to deduce future rankings of your website.
Therefore bounce rate is an important parameter, but it is impossible to detect correct bounce rates in certain cases. Take for example, if your visitors does not have cookies enabled then it would be too difficult for your analytics to decide whether your bounce rate was 100% or 0%.

Sometimes a single page's high bounce rate affects overall bounce rate. Start lowering down the BR of such pages first.

I hadn't a clue what a bounce rate was until I read this thread! LOL
Looked mine up on Google, 31%. Guess that's ok????
So now I have questions about this. If someones on a page on your site, and they click on a product and it takes them to a product detail page that has it's own URL, is that considered a 'bounce' from that page?
I'm trying to make sense of the info on google about time spent on a page.

Most of my visits to Wikipedia are single page visits. Wikipedia could have a high bounce rate, but that doesn't mean there is anything worrying about the site.

John I agree to your statement, specially because of the perfect example u gave on Wikipedia, even i just go to my specific page of search there, after getting desired information without checking other pages.

The meaning of bounce rate depends on site. If your site is a dictionary, a high bounce rate has no value.
If your site is an online shop, a high bounce rate shows a lot of information.

I agree with you. Most of my sites have a bounce rate between 40% and 50% and I believe that people are finding what they are looking for.

John I think you have an excellent point on bounce rate. Personally when someone visits one of my sites or blogs and leaves on a google adsense ad making me money or signs up for one of the affiliate sites I promote this is considered them bouncing of my page since I make most of the links very visible from my home pages making sure to maximize the monetization of my traffic. I feel though if you have a high bounce rate and your website is let's say an e commerce site then there would be reason to worry. I feel that bounce rate only pertains to certain sites which need a visitor to click on more than one page to get money from that visitor.

What affects bounce rate? I have two sites that I work on; both are good content sites with unique content. The one has a bounce rate of about 50% and on the other it's 70%. The one with 70% bounce rate gets lots of strange visitors that bounce after spending exactly 0.00 time on the site. What causes that?

well I guess creating a precise title and description according to the content of your site is very helpful on minimizing bounce rate of your site, because some of the websites are creating their own title and description according to what keywords are high on searches that why they are using it even if its not so related for the sake of traffics.

John, I agree with you. That's how I explain it many times to clients as well. But remember that most goals online are to get sales, get people to subscribe (RSS/Twitter/E-mail). And therefore the bounce rate still should be low. You want to get conversions. So bounce rate can also mean there are a lot of information seakers rather than transaction seakers. I hope Google can think of some new invention that can replace or adjust Bounce Rate.

If you have a blog with interesting articles, a high bounce rate might be misleading in a case where you have a strong subscriber base. At some point they will only visit your site to see the updates.
But if your website is focused on sales, a high bounce rate is definitively not good since you want your visitors to be converted through your sales funnel.

I recently tested out bounce rates on some autosurfing websites out of curiosity and was surprised that I actually got a 85% bounce rate from AutoSurfPro because all of the others had a 100% bounce rate.
