Wrong Traffic, Wrong Keyword for Wrong Site!

Hi guys,

I have encountered this extremely confusing problem (atleast to me). I wont disclose the actual url or keywords for privacy reasons. I need your advice on "what could be the reason". Thanks before hand. ok here it goes....

I checked the stats of my client's website and found out that during last month, the highest number of visits were originating from a keyword totally irrelavant to our site. I checked the sources and found out yahoo, msn, live and then google were sending the traffic.

I tried all kind of stuff to my knowledge ranging from keyword in the content, anchor links, anchor texts, link pop on all the SEs, manually checked results for the keyword, hidden spammy stuff...but nothing so far...

Will start the Adwords campaign soon but want to get back the organic traffic back on honest track.

Solve this puzzle for me digging deep into your SEO brains

I wont worry that much if this happens to me...
I see this as Bonus Traffic...
Especially if its coming from SE's...
And if it brings conversions then that's a good thing...

Did you try searching the odd keyphrase/keyword in Google and finding the listing that is sending the traffic? What does the description say under the listing? What does Google say in the box at the top of the cached copy say?

The keyword itself is "pocket fisherman" which is sending me the highest traffic, but my website is completely related "weight loss cure". Poles apart!!!! what do you suggest

this instance always happened., you don't really expect that those keywords will be generated without your concern but sometimes it is good because it can give a traffic for your site coming from SE's.,

I'm not going to consider it as a wrong traffic to your site, its just normal to have such traffic from different SEs with a totally different keyword. this means that your site is driving organic traffic that is way too effective that even unrelated keywords, still finds your site... I think that's cool...

If your surprise keyword is like "VI@GRA" or other serious SPAM, then your website could be under virtual SEO attack.

This means that some competitor will purchase links with text like "VI@GRA", or "BRITNEY SPEARS" etc etc.

However in this case "pocket fisherman" looks innocous. It could be possible that your site is receiving back links from this "TITLE" or you have a DMOZ listing ( or DMOZ category) with that TITLE

Do let me know your inputs.

I don't see your site in the Yahoo! or Google SERPs for that term. Do you have an affiliate program? Could someone be abusing it with a cloaked redirect? You'll need to dig into your raw server logs to see the exact referral info to trace the mystery.

this won't really harm your site as long as it gives you traffic from SE. this will be a natural result since your sites are in SE's already.don't need to worry just make sure it is credible site.

Well guys, i know it may not harm me but it is not helpful either. When you have got targets to achieve or track ROI, this traffic is of no use.

Its a pretty logical that you optimize and market your site for your DESIRED keyword, and when you check the reports its like shocker.

There is a possibility of some one google bombing, but checked that as well. I'm starting to think it has something to do with the affiliate network. What d u think?

A guy on some other forum suggested it may be a BOT activity, and i need to check my log files...

Are you sure that the search traffic you are seeing with that term is coming from Google, Yahoo, MSN? I used to get search traffic with really bizarre keywords from Qango and other sources.

Affiliate network is possible. Maybe you are linked to those sites with certain keywords that you said gives you traffic from the SE's. Do you have any affiliates? I have checked your keyword "pocket fisherman" but didn't see your site on the top searches.

I guess that was what the other thread said "Luck" in SEO. Are you not happy with the result? And I think it will not hurt your site.
