Your luck was based on what you did.

well, one thing I consider in SEO that needs luck is driving lots of traffic and maintaing it or even drive more than usual...IMO, no one can manipulate and predict a site's traffic and tell how many can it drive for a day, in a week, or in a month...

I do think a little luck has to do with it. I created two blogs that ranked very well in the search engines because of the topics I used. I never thought about SEO before I created them. They had unique topics that didn't have a lot of competing sites.

I agree with you briggidere, I am new to SEO and have spent many, many hours studying SEO, reading articles etc,etc and our site was new in Oct 2007 and just after Christmas we had achieved several page one results on Google for some of our keyword search terms, in fact on Yahoo we have the number 1 position for one of the most competitive search terms "Orlando Villas for Rent".
So yes, lots of hard work and constant tweaks can bring some pleasant surprises.

I agree that is is hard work but there can be luck anywhere you go in life. Some people work hard and have a great site but never get anywhere!

Luck is not sustainable. It will get you short term gains. For example, you start spamming, you might get lucky and move up the serps quite easily.

YES. That is my answer. First of all, I believe that luck (or whatever anyone wants to call it) is a factor that exists in every facet of life. You can call it luck, fate, karma...
Specifically, let's say that the ultimate expert in seo gets a site running beautifully in rankings and then The Google algorithm is changed and the site slides greatly in the rankings. Is that not luck, or should I say bad luck?
I think that seo is a blend of science, art and luck.

I'll give you a scenario to think about.
You have a wiget service website. Your service is very niche. One day the national news do a story about your service, not directly speaking about your wiget website though. This starts lots of spin off stories on the web about this service and lots of links suddenly point at your site from these trusted news sources.
Now, what did you do to get these links? NOTHING. It was pure luck and chance. Now, you needed to have a reputable site for these links in the 1st place, but this will help your SEO efforts without your direct input. I call this LUCK.

Luck clear has some part to play in SEO the same as it does in other things. One can accidentally stubble on a combination of elements which, by virtue of the complexities and variables of search engines just hit the right notes in the right way and bingo your page is a star.
It's obviously better not to trust to luck when it comes to getting in the top ten spots in the SERP. After all why wouldn't you do all you can to get a page well ranked. All that being said however, I'll also take luck when ever I can get it.

If someone believes they have success in seo due to luck it is more likely a case of ignorance i.e.working with an old domain with authority links and not understanding the significance this will have in their results.

SEO Luck
There is some luck involved in SEO. Some examples: - waking up one morning to find that someone has linked to you from a high-powered site
- accidentally ranking for a keyword phrase that you didn't know was a high traffic one
- etc.
There is a saying:
"Hard work is the mother of good luck."
That "luck" is not going to happen without a lot of work...
