With a team depending on how big, you can handle as much as you can right? lol...
As an individual, several for multiple rankings in kw.

A single SEO can handle numerous of sites, but it really depends on the site. If its one site - very high competitive, he can spend his whole time on it, even it will be not enough.
If the sites are small, and doesn't pretend to go top, he could handle many, but also the results won't be very impressive.

Simple sites would be easy (duh) even for SEO. When the sites are true experts in their field and competing with other experts, it maybe tough.

if you have a team, maybe you can handle more sites.. but if your doing SEO alone, for a good site, maybe 2 or 3? I'm not sure.

it depends on the type of the sites, but if you're doing it alone IMO you can handle atleast 2-3.

depending on the task that they will give you...if it's not too much 2-3 sites will be good enough...

It depends to what extent you are promoting the websites and what is your competiton and targets for each site. In case it is a complete dynamic portal type website consisiting of products and services having 100's of pages that need constant updation, then one website may be sufficient.

I work 50-60 hours a week promoting websites of my clients. With some outsource help I designed, optimised, and managed 28+ websites from 15 clients. It doesn't include 3 websites I have by my own and 4 websites for non-profit organisations where I helped for free.
