Niche performance and qualified traffic
I think that we all lose fact that we are not going to be the next Google.
My concept has always been niche performance. You need to know your niche, competitors, and what they are doing to be popular. I guess it relates to length of keyword strings. For instance, my site is not going to compete for STOCKS on a search. However, a search for OLD STOCK CERTIFICATES VALUE does ok because it relates to my niche on the web and in business.
I am not going to compete with CNBC and generic traffic does not help me. This leads to my second tenet of qualified traffic. I can have a million visitors an hour but are they interested in my goods or services. Niche performance has the added benefit of becoming an expert (or look like one) as you work on your site and marketing.
Counter-arguments:
Why not try to broaden my niche or appeal? Yes I would be thrilled to be listed high with the big boys! I do my SEO thing and clean up my pages to try this bit by bit but I am a staff of one. It is worth trying but don't spend all of your time here.
Some folks say with big numbers comes something. True but I get great revenue from little numbers by executing to my niche. It is easy to get big traffic numbers but the effort is wasted. If you are a generic site, what makes folks want to stay and click on links within your site?
