its depend of what site it is, i mean when you are promoting your site, it is the best putting the exact page of the site as it is.. i think thats the reason there putting internal link.

Simple explanation of deep linking:

sample www.xyz.com is your homepage,

if you have an the internal page for example --> www.xyz.com/works.html

This is www.xyz.com/works.html, the page you should promote instead of just the www.xyz.com. That is deep linking.

Yeah, deep linking is really helpful especially if your targeting a certain Keyword for a certain page. And its also recommended to build links on all the pages.
