It depends on your niche. If your niched have more competitors on a certain specific keywords, then you should use the long tail. It's hard to target a specific keywords with more competitors. Or you can use both, specific keywords for your primary keywords and long tail for your secondary keywords.

youre right.. i was thinking.. its better to target longtail Kw than specific (but iam not saying dont target specific Kw) for me.. upon query if target let say online video conference.. still you have hit the specific search video conference as well as online video.. so it doesnt matter to have priority on long tail instead of specific.. am i right?

It depends on the niche and keyword competition. If it has a high keyword competition, better go with long tail keywords.

Using long tailed keywords is effective when you have bunch of competitors targeting for same keywords as yours..The advantage of this one is that using long tailed keywords is you can established your site in a way where you will not be drowned in page ranking due to high competitiveness..you can use substitute or synonyms for your targeted keywords is also a good way in staying at the competition..then if you already established your long keyword you can now start to partake your keywords targeting now the one phrase keyword..chances are high to be on the top of the competition..

My answer is: Both

It is almost always possible to target some long tails along the way to decent rankings for specific terms.

I always try to rank for both. I vary my anchor texts when building links so as to rank also for longtail keywords and always include my major keyword.

Both. If you get the specifics right, the long tail follows easily.

If the competition is high then start with the long tail, so it create a space for your website in search engine result pages and after that anchor the specific keywords for better position.

It really depends on your niche, Highly specific multi-word phrases tend to be far easier to rank well than the more generic single keyword or double keyword phrases.
