For search engine (smaller search engines) and directory submission - it is always better to submit manually.

A bit time consuming but you get better results in the long run.
proper selection of which directories to submit to is also an important factor to be considered IMO.

Rick2 is web crap
I used a good directory submission service and it worked out quite well. They manually submitted my site to 4 or 5 SEO friendly directories a day for $15 a month. Most good directories will not take automated submissions.

I prefer Manual Submissions. We shouldn't rely much on these softwares or auto submissions.

Atomatic submission creates link similarity between websites which use the same software.

The best automatic link building is when you create scripts and widgets which people use on their sites.

I'd go for manual submissions because you have control with the sites your submitting and automatic submissions are most likely bad for SE's.

i think, BOTH are ok and has its own advantages and disadvantages. If you'll use manual, yes you can be sure where you submit your websites but it takes too much time. If you do automatic, it maybe fast but there are a few risks as well.

The best thing is to be sure of what you are using.

and by the way, a lot of people said that using software for submission is bad for SE? That's a MYTH. Read back the guidelines of Google and you will know

I prefer manual directory submission, Reason -

We select effective and useful directories
We use different anchor text or keywords in Title
We submit in different Categories

Disadvantage of software submissions like -

First of all it generates submissions in bulk or huge amount.
If the website is new then it should not recommend to create many links in short time.
Automated links are not analyze according to the SEO point of view.

Most of free directory have captcha feature which cannot be bypass by automated submission (or can they?) thus giving you a limited number of directory to submit your website.

Both are good, but that depends on automated software you are using....

The software must be at least next to reality.... Manual submission is an exhausting work and automated submission helps saves time...

Manual is free while automated is paid.

I do not agree with all that say that Manual Submissions are better than Auto Submissions.
Actually there is no pure Automatic Submission.

Semi-Automatic for me is the best. Use good software and list of directories that work perfectly with it, can bring amazing results.

I also do not agree that most directories do not accept auto submissions. Just directory can not determine what is manual , automatic or semi automatic.

And also submissions done with software mix different titles in perfect way, which will be pretty impossible for human.

Auto submissions save time and you have almost full control over the whole process . In addition i can say , that you can track your results better when you use software and resubmit out-of-date submissions.

Link Similarity - using automatic submission you create the same links like other webmasters who use the same software. Google can punish websites for link similarity.
Spammy submission - using software you can't control where you link goes. Link could appear next to porn, gambling, illegal sites and it will destroy your business.
Link quality - webmasters who run trusted websites protect themself from automatic submissions. You will never get quality link with submission software!
