Tips In Choosing which Directories to Submit to
Directories have been good sources of one-way links for a long time. It is a one of the easiest link building method especially for newer sites. But quality is still the name of the game. Some pointers in selecting the directories to submit to:
High PR - indication that Google sees some value in the directory.
Well maintained - listed sites are in the proper category
High Traffic - getting traffic could be minimal form directories, but majority are targeted
Kewords ranking high in SERP - Well optimized, shows that the directory is well-marketed and SEO'ed.
Which to avoid:
Link farms that pose as directories
Directories that require reciprocal links
Crappy ones with crappy sites listed
What are your thoughts? Care to add more pointers?

You could also do a quick check to see if recent additions to the directory have been indexed by Google. If the page with your link will not be indexed, you will just waste time submitting to the directory.

Thanks to Mr Cat for starting the ball rolling on this one.
Anyone got any opinions on or experience with the 'hot frog' directory in the UK?
http://www.hotfroguk.co.uk/
Also, I think I would have trouble spotting a 'link farm' as distinct from a 'real' directory - any tips anyone?

One is that your site/page won't get indexed from inclusion in such. You really don't get any value from them.

Check first if your site is already included in that particular directory..

That one seems decent to me; pr5 and associated with reed business. Also a quick search on Google yields nothing weird.

Nice list
Better be careful on this:
"Link farms that pose as directories
Directories that require reciprocal links
Crappy ones with crappy sites listed"

Articles submission is also important to gain more traffic. There are this called Article Submitter and Directory Submitter that allows you to submit your article. Just give it a try! :-)

Sure, I'll help add to this list. How about directories with 30 footer links and 20 sidebar links, all of which are unrelated to directories.
And for free directory submissions, don't submit to high PR directories. By the time they get around to reviewing your submission, those new directories that you skipped will now be PR 3's...

another tip would be to avoid making footprints. An example of this is creating different pages on a website and many different articles on free article submission sites and linking them all together.
Another example is say you have a post on Digg, and you get a group of people to Digg your post and in return you digg theirs.
Both examples leave footprints and the search engines can detect this and will penalize you.
